transmission issues (Page 1/1)

So today I was out on a mountain road and I took a corner and tried to shift into 3rd gear and I didn't have it. I shifted into fourth and it worked tried to go into first and reverse and they are also dead. Second and fourth still work I think it is a shift fork but I am not sure. If anyone else has had this problem it would be much appreciated if you have any solutions. I know I have to take the transmission out at this point I just need a idea of what is broken. The shifter also is very hard to move left and right and the reverse, first and third is all at the top of my sifting, if that is any more useful information.

Thank you for the help!

Before you start pulling transmissions...

With the engine not running, are you able to get into these gears you're having trouble with?

If not, disconnect the cables at the transmission and see if you can move the levers into the correct positions for each gear.

Check the little "U" clip that holds the cable to the bracket in the engine bay. On a 1985 Fiero GT that I had, a little metal clip broke off, and I couldn't shift into 1st, 3rd, or reverse either. I had to use some zip ties, and then found a clip at the junkyard later that week.

Yep.
I bet the "U" clip is missing.
