Swapping Duke from S10 (Page 1/1)

So I need to swap out my stock 84' Iron Duke because the engine that came with the car is totally pooped.

I was browsing Facebook marketplace for a motor to swap in and I found a running Iron Duke out of a Chevy S10. It's one of the only ones I can find that within my price range my only concern is will it actually work.

The Chevy S10 I'm looking at is a Manual FR car, so I'm hoping it has the same bolt pattern as the Iron duke with the front wheel drive transmission. I'm keeping all of the Fiero specific parts in anticipation for this engine not to fit as is. Parts like the flex plate, oil pan, mounting brackets, etc.

My main question is are the blocks used in the Chevy S10 and Fiero any different? Parts of the block such as mounting points, and bellhousing bolt pattern.

For 1980 the Iron Duke engine was redesigned to be mounted transversely, to suit the new front-drive General Motors "X-body" cars. The bellhousing bolt pattern was revised to match that of the new 60° V6 engine.

Also called the GM small corporate pattern and the S10 pattern

This pattern has a distinctive odd-sided hexagonal shape. Rear wheel drive applications have the starter mounted on the right side of the block (when viewed from the flywheel) and on the opposite side of the block compared to front wheel drive installations. The 2.2l S10/Sonoma had the starter located in the same position as front wheel drive cars. A rear wheel drive bellhousing is displayed at right, and the integrated front wheel drive bellhousing is displayed at the lower right (in this case, as a part of the GM 6T70 Transmission).

FWD and Fiero VIN R Engine have things different then RWD Truck VIN A & E version.
Just what may depend on Year even before "hitting the wall" between 86-87 model year.

Example: Several Trucks Blocks I've seen didn't have WP Holes to mount FWD or Fiero "Sidesaddle" WP and Base.

Hey James... I'm not sure what condition your old Duke engine is in... but if the bottom-end is quasi-salvagable... you could buy something like this:

... and then swap in the crank and rods / pistons with new rings. Just a thought and something to consider...
