Fierostore throttle cable failed after 4000 miles. Looking for quality replacement (Page 1/2)

Hello,

'85 duke auto with AC

Today my Fierostore throttle cable broke after just 4000 miles. I'm worried a new one from Fierostore again won't last. Are there any recommended replacements to those cables? Sending out one for warranty back to the USA isn't economically viable today even if they would replace it for free the shipping costs are just too much. Thanks.

The GM part you need is 10041509 CABLE, Accelerator Control and Discontinued.....

When I searched for a cross reference or interchange, I got no results!

To me, replacing throttle cables is rare on all of my vehicles and normally only lube them. I would check that the cable isn't making any real tight turns which could cause it to bind and fails.

You might have to bite the bullet on another TFS cable; I suggest lubing the new cable before installing it.

I use brand 'Dri-Slide' Lubricants with molybdenum disulfide and graphite; once dry, it forms a nonstick film that won't attract dust.

Good luck on your search!

Thanks, will cosider the Fierostore again but cautiously. I'm actually thinking if it wouldn't be easier and more reliable to buy a 12V servo for the throttle body and a potentiometer for the gas pedal... Shouldn't be too hard to execute though I've never seen anybody retrofit this stuff before on the duke.

EFI in Australia makes some drive by wire kits. They sell the pedal and remote servos.

I took my old cable outer sheath and picked up some motorcycle cable and built my own.It was not hard to do and i just silver soldered the ends which can be done with a propane torch. It worked just fine. I got rid of my cable throttle body eventually and went to drive by wire but that was a lot of work and expense. sleek

Same problem on a FS Throttle cable about 8 years ago.
The replacement I wrapped with silver 'metal' duct tape so that it might reflect a bit of heat instead of absorbing it. And knock on wood, the replacement has worked fine.

CAN replace the core IF the jacket is Good.

If the Jacket is melted or bent too tight, then fixing the core won't help.

The heat shield tape etc helps some but Exhaust leaking or just too close to it can melt the jacket fast.

Bending... One spot is where goes thru the Firewall. Many Fiero cables a force to bend way too tight by routing in the cabin, engine bay or Both @ that spot.

Binding problems @ TB/TBI won't help either, more so w/ Fiero Very Long Throttle cable.
many people put stronger spring on TB/TBI end is also big problems.

Fiero has same size as FWD & other Front Engine but ~ 3 times Longer. Length Matters to All cables @ rope setups w/ longer = weaker @ given diameter. + The Jacket is Bent way more too adding to cable load.

My daughter and I are working on an 85 Fiero 2.5 w/ 5-Speed that she bought earlier this year that has this very thing... the throttle cable is wrapped in metal ducting tape... and I was wondering what in the world that was on there for... but now it totally makes sense! Haha...

The FS cable had a heat shield on it. It didn't fail there, it failed on the throttle pedal side. Cable is fine. The jacket is ripped out so there's that.

It's actually the same reason I replaced the cable. The original one on the car also the jacket failed but on the throttle side.

Post pic of the damage.

Jacket parts can fail holding @ the end(s) can be cause by same problems... Binding TBI, "Strong" TBI spring, etc.

REPLACING w/ another cable & still have problem(s) w/ other parts will only break the cable again & likely sooner then last one.

Gas Pedal often have problems too & can put weird loads on the cable.
Black plastic square & floor metal & "rod" goes between those wear bad & pulls "sideways" more as pulls the cable out that can break the jacket end.

Gas pedal assembly is same parts as FWD but the Rod is "U shape" to work in Fiero. It wear because no grease etc. Worse if anyone grease the pivot because most eat the plastic & hold dirt too.
Is also why many Fiero can reach WOT at TB/TBI end & most just blame "weak engine w/ no power."
