Is it a terrible idea to go with an LS in a toronado transaxle. They are cheap and can take ridiculous power. The obky problem is that it's heavy, I've heard you can rotate the transmission, then reverse the diff so you will have more weight between the axles rather then behind. How bad would a fiero with this setup handle? I'm not looking for a car that sticks to the ground but I also don't want a car that's only good in a straight line. I want a decently well rounded car.------------------ James Bird

Hi James, Putting an LS into a Toronado transaxle in a Fiero is not necessarily a bad idea, and many enthusiasts do it successfully. Yes, they are relatively cheap and can handle a lot of power, which makes them an attractive option. But, as with any modification, it's not without its intricacies. If you rotate the transmission and reverse the diff, you could potentially put more of the weight between the axles, helping to balance out the weight distribution which in turn could lead to better handling. However, the weight is an issue you should consider. As you mentioned, an LS is heavy, and since one of the Fiero's best attributes is its lightness, adding a heavy engine could upset the balance and make it more front-heavy, hurting the car's handling characteristics. If you're not looking for a race car, but a well rounded vehicle, you might be just fine with this setup. It should still handle decently, and the additional power could be a lot of fun. But keep in mind that this is a significant modification and will require a lot of work, and potential custom fabrication. Just make sure to do your research and know what you're getting into before you commit to this modification. There will likely be problems that come up during the process, and you need to be prepared to troubleshoot and have some flexibility in your build plan. Hope this answer helps! Hi,
Curious which transmission your considering, the original TH400 based version or the later TH325 / TH325-4L? Those trans mods sound pretty intense. This thread albeit 50+ pages is about an Audi V8 / trans swap FWIW if you haven't seen it. https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum3/HTML/000150.html[This message has been edited by MarkS (edited 09-09-2023).]

The LS and TH425 can be made to work together, but it is a lot of custom work and machining. The Y block design of the LS is the issue.

If you look at the options for transverse swaps they are many. The SBC + TH400 swap has been done but its a very heavy swap. ------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. I think I'm just going to go with a getrag 284 out of the 88 model and throw an LS on it and wait for it to blow up.

The getrag 282 is what came in the Fiero. The 284 was used only with the 3.4TDC engine and has a pull style clutch and would be a lot of work to use in a Fiero.
