Caster washers (Page 1/1)

Been replacing all my dry rotted control arm bushings with poly this week, got to my passenger side upper arm, pulled the bolt out and noticed that both of the thick caster washers were on one side instead of one on each side like my driver's side was. Should I put it back how I found it or put them back how they're supposed to be?

The car will need to be aligned after your rebuild, so it doesn't really make any difference.

Just be sure that the alignment shop does a four wheel alignment, rather than the modern 'toe and go' commonly performed on modern cars.

It seems odd, but it could be that it was done as a result of the car hitting a curb or something to that effect. I've never seen them that way from the factory. I would have the caster / camber measured and adjust them to how you want it. You can buy additional / smaller shim washers to get the right angle you want. I'm guessing either someone put them back the wrong way, or there was some damage from hitting a curb or something and they had to do it.

We have seen a lot of different washer positions in very low mileage cars, some that have never had an alignment since they left the factory.

They are there to ADJUST the camber.

I had an alignment done many years ago and the shop could not get enough caster with one washer on each side. To save on cost I asked the shop to let me take the car home and I would move the washers. Moved the 2 washers together and took it back to the shop. With little adjustment the alignment came in within the shop's limits. Let the alignment shop put the washers where needed.

Seeing as how this was my grandfather's car and I think he taught my mom to drive in it, I wouldn't discredit a curb hit LOL
