2002 3100sfi SWAP INTO 87 5SPD (Page 1/1)

Hello all...this newbie would like to find out-- preferably from someone who's actually done it 😁-- what, exactly, would be involved with swapping a spare 3100sfi out of a 2002 Grand Prix SE into an '87 5spd originally with the 2.8...namely any mounting issues, relocation of alternator or notching of decklid, notching frame for oil pan clearance, OBDII or a simpler ('94-'95?) OBDI which would still allow for sfi function, any air pocket issues with cooling system, bypassing the steering pump, etc...? Thanks to all in advance

I'm hoping Lou Diaz can respond, because he has a Gen-2 roller block in his Fiero. There's no cutting or frame notching or anything like that. Matter of fact, I think literally everything bolts up. Like, the bell-housing is the same, so you can re-use the 5-Speed Getrag, and I even think the engine motor mounts are the same.

It should be a pretty simple swap, the only issue will be slightly custom exhaust, and the wiring. With any engine swaps... the factory Fiero dash does not use any of the computer... it's all fed directly from sensors on the motor (to the best of my knowledge), like the tach off a tach lead, speed off the vehicle speed sensor, and temp off a separate temp sensor, voltage, etc... so that's a non issue... just find the location on the engine for those sensors, which is fairly similar.

Engine management would simply just use the harness and ECM from the Grand Prix.

Is this because you have a Grand Prix donor car with an engine available? Or are you looking specifically to do this swap because you like the motor? If the later, you could also just go with a 3400 SFI from a Grand Am or something.

Actually it's in my Grand Prix-- which I'm planning to upgrade to a 3500 turbo-- right now...I've had it for almost 20 years and know its history...even did the infamous LIM repair on it. 😭 I like the engine, it just doesn't have nearly enough power for the GP...and the '87 has the engine out now anyway, so...🤔

Yeah, I think you'll be happy. My understanding is that they just drop right in.

I've done a Gen-1 2.8 to 3.2 stroker kit... (.040 overbore w/ 3.1 crank and rods)... I realize this is a little different, but there won't be any cutting. People drop V8s back there without any cutting. It should be a fairly straight-forward swap.
