'88 steering column to steering rack boot (Page 1/1)
JOE 4RE SEP 19, 08:46 PM
Got a call from my mechanic this evening that he noticed the boot covering the steering column shaft to rack input shaft was split. My shop manual is in the car (at the shop) and looking at my P car parts catalog, I don't see a column to rack boot listed (unless it's item #17 but that looks higher up the shaft??). Does anyone have a part number/source for this boot?

THANKS

I just dug this up. Perhaps it will help.

Or this pic. seems to have a boot where you expected.

Your correct it's #17 in the P22 parts manual

88 10054966
84-87 10029220

Those are part numbers from the book dated November 90. Availability on that part you might be lucky. I've never seen one of those go bad or split, you should be fine with a used one. you could probably get away with an early year one, it is probably just longer.

It just keep crap out/off of lower section & prevent air flowing thru column hole.
Depending just where a spit is often won't the column but may allow crap in, worse hold it too.

Is likely vinyl & most glues won't work to repair. Could treat like waterbed etc w/ patch & right glue that "welds" it.
Or "duct tape" better glue layer that won't fail when wet etc.

to pull it, has to drop upper column & remove U-joint bolt Then remove Bolt(s) holding it.

I would check clean & grease lower section. Use Permatex Brake Grease because won't run when hot parked outside to get on you.
