For replacing the rear control arm bushings, is it necessary to remove the spring/strut and tear everything apart, or can I simply unbolt the control arm while there is no load in the suspension, then slide it out a few inches to replace the bushings.

pop BJ off the knuckle then pull whole CA to replace the bushing on a bench. ------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. (Jurassic Park)

Ok, that will make it easier, but there is nothing I need to do with the spring? I know on the front the spring must be removed to take load off of the lower control arm, but from what I understand in the rear the spring is held entirely by the strut, so nothing else needs to be specifically removed?

Correct. The rear springs won't be going anywhere as long as you don't remove the single large nut at the top of the strut.
