84 Suspension Ideas (Page 1/2)
BruhMans06 OCT 06, 04:01 PM
So I have an 84' Fiero, and I'm trying to get it set up with some high to mid range preformance suspension. Preferably airbags.
I'm planning on doing custom rear multilink suspension to replace the sway bar-less **** in the back. What would be good kits to build around that have similar dimensions? coilovers and airbags are preferable but I'll take any suggestions

Thanks much

I mounted a Fiero front sway bar in the back of my '84 (along with cut/lowered springs)... and IMO, my '84 handled just as well (if not better) than my '88 Formula (with lowering springs) at autocross.

I just went to the Fiero Store. I distinctly remember they sold a rear sway bar. I guess they don't sell it anymore?

Click on the pic of the front bar?

Did you cut the springs of the front and back? I'm curious on how I would be able to cut the rear ones without having to take apart the strut and possibly impaling myself.

I just looked at the Fiero store 84-87 sway bar page; You must first select >>REAR<< and then WAIT for the system to process the fact that you have selected the rear bar...Once the system has stabilized on >>REAR<< bar- then you click on the pic and it shows the rear bar and price (Computers- Yech!)

I have an 85 SE V6- I swapped in an 88 rear subframe (Solid mounting to add rigidity to the frame) with the 88 rear suspension which is leaps and bounds better than the early suspension...I kept the front 85 suspension which is more robust than the 88.

I gave my front suspension as much castor as possible and also installed the after-market ball joints which allow you to give your front some NEGATIVE camber. I also did some weird things with the stabilizer bar mounting to get Better turn-in response while cutting back on DTO (Snap oversteer) My car is extremely neutral in all situations.

Here is a link to my thread on mounting stabilizer bars; https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/140674.html

On the '84... yes, I cut both the front and back springs. The front ones are fairly straightforward to remove to cut. The rear struts need to be disassembled, which requires spring compressors...

...and an impact gun to remove the large nut at the top of the struts. When the struts are disassembled, it's a good time to see if they're still functional. If you have the factory originals, toss 'em and get new ones. The top hat of the strut also needs to be flipped. Otherwise, when the rear springs have been shortened, at full suspension drop, the springs won't stay in place in the struts.

And by the way, don't even consider lowering the front suspension unless you also plan the shorten the metal "cone" that the rubber bump stop is attached to.

If you're now getting the impression that there's more to lowering the suspension that just shortening the springs, you'd be right.

Your 84 with a rear sway bar handled better than your 88, for sure something is majorly wrong with your 88, it's probably not safe to drive.

It's been unsafe for the last ten years of day to day driving then, including four years of autocross.

can you imagine if the 88 was fixed? ^^
