987 Seat Swap (Page 1/3)

Hello! For the longest time I have wanted leather seats in my Fiero. I have looked at Mr. Mikes for years and unfortunately they're a bit out of my price range at the moment, I have looked at F-Body and Corvette seats and those are usually thrashed or very pricey not to mention the leather is probably quite dry by now. I've been looking around and found a pair of 987 seats local to me and I picked them up for $300. I'm pretty certain they'll fit in the Fiero, they are a bit on the taller side. I am 6' and the seat back is a tiny bit shorter than my head while I'm sitting in the seat. If I'm able to maintain the same seat height as the Fiero then it should fit no problem.

My plan is to figure out a way to mount the Fiero seat tracks to this. The underside is a bit complicated as the seat is able to be adjusted upwards and downwards with a manual lever. Worst case scenario, I'll figure a way to remove all that stuff and mount the tracks to the bottom of the seat so there is no height adjustment. My goal is to try and retain the features though. They seats are also power adjustable with the reclining function which is pretty cool.

My local junkyard has many Fieros to pick and choose from, I have a list of stuff I need to pick up and I'm adding the seat tracks to the list. I am hoping that I'll be able to get the seats installed by November.

I do have a bit of experience doing seat swaps, I have swaped CTS-V Recaros into my 2012 Regal GS, that wasn't too bad of a job as I got it done in a weekend and had to make a plug n play wiring harness for it and it went great so I have high hopes for this.

A Porsche 987 is a 2nd Gen Booster/Cayman.

I took the passenger seat out after work today to do a quick test fit. The seats are a bit tall, but they'll fit.

Did you sit in the seat? Looks to be a tall seat.

Yes, of course I sat in the seat. I haven't even done any fabricating yet, I just put it in there to test the fitment and it still has the factory Porsche tracks which appear to be higher than what it'll be when I swap the Fiero tracks onto it. My main concern was determining if it actually would fit inside the cabin as it is right now.

My only observation is it does look like a taller seat. As long as you are good with it, all is well. For me, I like the way the stock seat sits very close to the floor, so personally that is what I would want with a replacement. I will be honest; I have not openly searched for a seat to suit my needs though. Thank you for the post showing what you are doing.

This morning we had a ton of rain in the area, but I had to go to the junkyard regardless of the weather so I could grab some seat tracks to play around with. There's about 10 Fieros at the junkyard, most didn't have any seats, but I was lucky enough to leave with a driver and passenger seat track set. I'll likely be going back again next weekend to pick up a few odds and ends.

Tomorrow I should be able to start working on mounting the tracks to the seats. Hopefully it won't be too bad of a project.

Got a lot of work done today. My father and I did not see a very good way of mounting the Fiero tracks to the bottom of the seat, so we started cutting the seat tracks and removing unneeded material and the seat track handle and cleaned the bottom of quite a bit. Some of the metal on the 987 tracks were bent over so we used a grinder and cut the bend off so we'd have more room as well.

Here is a photo of the bottom of the seats after removing excess material:

After we did that, we put the Fiero seat tracks on the inside of the Porsche seat tracks and wouldn't you know it, it was a perfect fit! The bolt holes for mounting the seat to the car should be in the perfect spot. I think it may be a bit of a tight squeeze trying to put the seats in with the rails, but I'm fairly confident that it'll work.

I bolted the seat tracks down and we put the seat inside to do a bit of a test fit. The seat will be up and to the right a bit when it's mounted.

Tomorrow, someone will be coming over to tack weld the rails onto the seat in order to test the fitment and once everything is good to go, he'll weld the tracks to the seat and then we should be good to go. Then I'll hook up power and ground and have a power recline seat too.

No comments? Must be a tough crowd. Hoping the welding after work goes well and this project can be wrapped up.
