Fiero buggy needs help (Page 1/1)
Misterguppy OCT 22, 05:39 PM
I am a long time dune buggy owner and builder. I recently acquired a sandrail with a 1984 Fiero rear cradle installed with a 2.5 Iron Duke and automatic transmission. I had my knee replaced and am looking forward to an automatic buggy. It is an incomplete project and I am in need of a little help. Does anyone know of anybody that cuts down (deletes not needed wires) wiring harnesses and flashes the cpu? Thanks for any help.

Well, you could pretty much eliminate everything if you wanted to go to a carburetor and a vacuum advance distributor. You could just buy an older intake manifold for an Iron Duke, and drop a single barrel carb on there, and then just buy a new distributor for a slightly older 2.5 Duke. You'd be able to cut down on basically everything except what you needed for the gauges, ignition coil, and the fuel pump. For the fuel pump, you could just use one of those 6-psi pusher pumps.

Is not as simple to switch carb & vac dist.
Have to address TH125 needs TV cable to carb + govern set for very light vehicle to shift right.

Even w/ ECM the trans needs its govern set right for vehicle weight.

Yeah... or, you could go with a MicroSquirt set-up, which is a very small ECM, and you can re-route almost everything.

ECM Doesn't need to get new "Chip" burned because of weight etc because Still has same engine & trans to run.

Little point using MicroSquirt here if main issue is reducing engine wires. It needs most to all of same wires & sensors to run the engine. Plus ECM can lock TC even for this use. Also Kills power to F-pump when engine isn't running. About only "Optional" wires go to AC.

MicroSquirt Only helps some because maybe can "read" VSS w/o Buffer/Divider board or Fiero Speedo that have it built in.

OE ECM & others including MicroSquirt don't control shifting of TH125 & 4T__ transmissions. Plus most to all MicroSquirt installs don't support TC Locking.

4T__E run by PCM is control electrically but beyond scope here.

LC locking is mainly for MPG savings running on the highway... Can "act like" Overdrive because reduces Engine RPM + helps keep the Trans cooler too when drive > 35mph.

Any "ECM" needs "Water Proofing" for this use but OE ECM Case is also Heat Sink for many parts so needs air to move on & in it.

I apologize, I meant to write more, but there was a lot going on and I forgot to add everything else I said. Yeah, automatic still an issue. I merely meant that he could use the Microsquirt and eliminate all the wires he didn't need, and just get a "fresh start" so to speak, rather than having to use a car's wiring harness adapted to a sand rail.
