85 SE V6 engine running bad (Page 1/2)
cvxjet OCT 23, 02:48 PM
My 85 SE has the F-body 3.4 swap....has always run a little off (Especially slow/around town) but now it is running worse. When I start it it does not go to high idle, and then cycles up and down almost dying at times....after warm-up it has a very slight lope to the idle. Also, when I shift above 2000 rpm it gives off a horrible sound from the exhaust.

I have changed out the MAP, TPS, Oxy sensor, MAT.....Ignition; the wires, plugs, cap and rotor...and now the fuel injectors. Very slight improvement with the OXY sensor, but ran worse when I swapped in a new IAC (Re-installed old one)

Any idea what could be wrong (Besides the "Loose nut behind the wheel")

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you put a scan tool on it?

A) Have had no codes show up, and B) I bought the scan tool adapter setup for my computer years ago but could not get it to work- and now I can't find it...

(Funny/Ridiculous addendum; I fixed computers at Atari back in 1982- actually came up with a fix for a problem in one week that took their head tech 2 months in his lab to solve- But I can't PROGRAM a computer to save my life)

You are my new best friend CVXJet... are you buying the new Atari 2600+ that just came out? It ships next month... I have two on pre-order...

Yes... it plays 2600 and 7800 games, and has a 4-core RISC processor, haha...

Anyway, some thoughts on your situation. I had a very similar situation in which I basically replaced like... EVERYTHING on my car, pretty much everything. And it turned out to be my catalytic converter. It was a 1997 Grand Am GT (loved that car), and actually... I got so frustrated that I ended up selling it with that problem. I asked the new owner that if he ever figured out what the problem was, to e-mail me.

He found out a month later... after pulling the motor... that it was the catalytic converter. He was pissed because it was such a simple thing. The cat had melted in on itself, clogging up the cat. For me, this happened slowly, which resulted in a gradual decline in engine performance until one day it just more or less closed itself off. It could idle fine, but anything over 1,200 rpms (basically anything above a crawl), it would studder and die. But it got gradually worse over time, but then got REALLY bad all of a sudden while I was on the highway.

Anyway, this COULD be your problem, and no amount of code checking could give me the answer (and that was OBD-2). Honestly, not sure how you check it without actually removing the cat... but this is my thought. For what it's worth, it was caused by a "rich" condition.

No-no....I have a dog- but no cat! Actually, 10 years ago I had a tuning problem...solved it and went for a drive on Mines road (Ranch land + outdoors)(And lots-O-turns)...car started dying.....waited ten minutes and it would re-start....Got her home- never could figure what went wrong.....then couldn't pass my CA smog-check...had to replace the CAT.....and it was an empty shell! (Must have been coming apart and clogging during that drive)

So I had an extra flange welded into the exhaust down-stream from the CAT and then a CAT-less pipe made up so if things start going wrong, I can remove the CAT....And the CAT looks fine, at the moment (But lonely)

I have one more sensor to replace- the engine temp sensor...try to do it today.

Where do you suppose the contents of your old cat ended up?

Has the muffler been replaced since the cat was eliminated?

Picture of old (Dead) cat.....

(Shaken out of exhaust system)

Well, I tried resetting the compuker...It seemed to run a bit better but the idle goes thru fluctuations sometimes now- almost dying every once in a while.

Make sure your EGR valve isn't sticking open.

My experience from five years ago - I guess EGR valves don't last forever...
