Any way to repair cracks in factory GT tail lights? (Page 1/1) |

I just traded my 04 Mustang for an 88 Fiero GT 5-speed. It has the factory tail lights on it, which are delaminating badly. Also, the passenger driver side lens has a crack about 3 inches long in it.
Is there any way to fix these cracks to make them less visible? I cannot afford the Goodyear tail light lenses. Also trying to figure out a way to fix the delaminating problem as well.
Any suggestions?
Thanks! Phil

not really.
UV light etc makes the plastic brittle & easy crack after 20+ years. GT Tail seems to have this worse but Notchies tail & more can have same problem. Example: I had Front side marker that faded to clear then finally broke into pieces.
You might very carefully solvent weld the crack closed but easily break again anywhere even right next to current spot. Thermal or sonic welding on clear plastic make worse problems & look like crap too.

Are the Fiero GT tail lights made of Acrylic plastic?

I'm pretty sure they are polycarbonate.

Ok. I have seen videos on youtube where people make silicone molds of the original parts to make acrylic replicas of the original lenses... I wonder how long those replicas last?

nope, put an add in the mall to buy a set, or check the junkyards for a Fiero. Once and a while you get lucky.

At one point I saw on the Forum a seller for replacement rear "lenses" for, in my case, the 1988 GT. I'll Google now and see if I can find. Feel free to search in the Forum.
As I recall, the replacements were NOT cheap.

Take fixture out. Look @ "side" where the cover wraps/clips to the rest. Somewhere should be GM Part # & near that should be type of plastic in letters on most plastic parts. (Most part have Type "Code" way before fake "recycle" code now "printed" on everything plastic.) Think ABS for this. Many others are PP = Polypropylene
Making ones... Often they don't last. Worse, DIY & most or all aftermarket replacement are Illegal for many reasons.
Example: Most don't have DOT marks & if cops or inspectors look... can get a Ticket because any cover over taillights are illegal in many places & Inspectors can Fail you for same reason.
What DOT marks? see https://web.archive.org/web...~fierocave/lamps.htm @ bottom. "current" list http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/146377.html
