Tough to do with a manual transmission car.

Due to the fact that it simply can't be done that way with a MT equipped car, I never bothered timing my auto transmission '86 GT in that manner.

I too have never timed a car in gear, and it has never been an issue.

I've heard of it and did it on a lady's 85SE when we replaced the TCC switch. She had used a new car dealer for routine servicing and there was lots of stuff they had wrong, including timing.

Why? How would that even be possible with a manual?

The proper way to set the timing as described in the manual has worked since 1984.
