Any point in rebuilding an axle from 5 speed? (Page 1/1)

Hello

I snapped the joint on my driver's side axle last year. Replaced it with an OEM spare one that I had- (Ended up having to lengthen it after F23 swap, and shorten the passenger side one to make them work properly)

My question is- should I toss the broken one, or get it rebuilt? I am kind of a hoarder about spare parts, and have a TrakMotive replacement already on the shelf as a spare- but I am not sure if the OEM one is better quality and should be rebiuilt?

Or are Fiero used axles still common enough to not bother rebuilding one?

Last question- I was told that all Fiero manual axles are the same. 4 speed, 5 speed Getrag, 5 speed Isuzu. Is this correct? If so, should still be easy to find spare

thanks

As far as I know... these are easily available for any of the model years currently... not because they still make them for the Fiero, but because these engine / transmission combinations... even on this very cradle, were common enough. I don't think it's worth saving broken parts... because if you could no longer get them in aftermarket, there are plenty of shops that can make you one for your exact size.

is this something that a 3800 swapper might need?if not toss it.

My understanding is that the aftermarket axle shafts are significantly weaker than OEM, based on the few aftermarket shafts I've seen/held, this wouldn't surprise me if it were true.

Exactly What Failed?
Examples:
Either CV can wear then fail if ignored even for the "weakest" engines. These can be replace fairly easy.
But when an Axle Shaft is broken is almost always a side effect of the root cause. While can replace them, the new shaft is likely to break again & soon.

In engine swaps w/ wrong axles or OE engines w/ bad mounts...
Inner CV can Fail because Tripot are force out of range w/ inner part is too far out or pushed in.
2 far Out mean will tear the axle in 2.
2 far In & hammer the center in the outer section & break 1 or more parts including the Trans parts.

Thanks for the replies. I have been told that the "Trakmotive" aftermarket axles are pretty strong- but have no way to really tell by looking at them.

Can someone please confirm that all Fiero manual trans axles are the same? If that is the case, then I won't bother to get this one rebuilt and will just find an OEM set

Thanks

I can confirm that side to side, all Fiero manual transmission axles are the same length, diameter and spline.
