Long story short, there's a 86 GT at pull-a-part here with a 5-speed. Its been on the lot since august, which is a long time and its overdue for the crusher. I don't have anyone willing to help pull it, so its me and whatever help pull-a-part staff can provide. They normally can pull parts for a fee but their parts puller guy quit months ago and they can't get anyone hired for it. So their help they said is limited to them using a fork lift to lift the car, and letting me use a cherry picker.
I just want the 5-speed and its shift cables. What's the quickest, easiest way to accomplish this? I was thinking of just cutting all the wires, hoses, etc, then supporting the engine with a floor jack, undoing the cradle bolts and having them lift the car off the cradle with the forklift. Then I can just get the trans off the engine and carry it off.
Another slightly unrelated question, are there any shops that can rebuild the inside of the getrag?
Pull-a-part said it'll probably be there through the end of the month. It'd be a shame for this getrag to end up in the crusher?

Clutch & U-Joint Proven Force in Maple Grove, MN rebuilds Getrags. 763.425.7474
It is not inexpensive, but we do not have alot of options. They rebuilt my 88 5sp a few months ago. Good luck with the pull. Kevin

Good idea. If you have the means to transport it, why not unbolt the cradle, cut hoses, etc as you described and take the cradle with motor & trans in tack. Less work and you get all the goodies including the engine. Considering they were going to crush it anyway, offer scrap value for whole hog.

My truck got hit by a tree months ago and got totaled by insurance, I still haven’t gotten it back on the road with a rebuilt title so I’ve got a sedan with a big trunk and that’s it. I should just be able to pick up the trans and put it in the trunk.
The engine is missing parts including the upper intake, I don’t really need a 2.8 and it has unknown miles on it, the gauge cluster is missing. The car wasn’t wrecked so I assume it’s there because of engine problems. Can’t imagine there’s a lot wrong with the getrag.

I don't know how "quick" it is... but you can remove the two rear cradle bolts and tilt the cradle down to pull the transmission out the side. Obviously the rear of the car needs to be high enough, and the engine needs to be held/suspended while the transmission is being removed.

wow, all the way from TN, or are you from or in MN now? at first I thought this was another option to a shop I am aware of in Zumbrota but I see they are the same people, they opened a second shop in the metro area apparently
It would have been nice if you said how much. Rodney's claims they use his front seal/throw out bearing shaft in a rebuild of a 5 speed Muncie, FWIW.[This message has been edited by ZaraSpOOk (edited 12-21-2023).]

Yep like this, remove drivers side strut and all you have to disconnect from the engine is the Vacuum brake feed hose and battery cables ( probably doesn't have a battery in it)

I'm interested to know what the getrag rebuild cost. Thanks

Not sure I would bother with 37 year old shift cables... new ones are still available as far as I know?
Shifter assembly and axles are probably more useful to grab

You'll need both.
Before you remove that tranny... Grab hold of one axle, close to the tranny, and shake it up and down. (You may feel some "play" in the splines, but that's pretty normal.) But if any of that up-down motion is transferred across and the other axle jumps up and down, it means the differential bearings are likely shot.[This message has been edited by Raydar (edited 12-24-2023).]
