What would happen if someone put an 87 GT Rack in an 88 GT? (Page 1/1)

I was wondering if there was a difference between the 84-87 GT steering racks and the 88 GT rack? I ask because when I last got under my car I noticed that the rack seems to have a place for the damper (though none is installed). It led me to think that at some point, someone installed an 84-87 GT rack in my 88... Did the 88 have the damper provision, but just not use it? What kind of effects would there be to steering if the 84-87 rack was used in my 88 Gt, but, no damper was used?

Thanks again,

Short answer is bump steer and the steering shaft would be too short.

I suspect what you are seeing is the bracket on the rack that was intended to support the EPS unit. This is a picture of the 88 steering rack.

They mount to the cross-member differently so your 88 would probably show obvious signs of welding or other fabrication. The tie rods are also different lengths so you would have some weird steering behavior (bump steer).

Ok, so mine is an 88. The extra unused bracket threw me off.

I will start looking at it tomorrow closer to see what could be causing this slop in my steering.

Maybe the pinion preload needs adjustment.
