1988 Getrag 5 Speed Clutch Lever Free Play? (Page 1/2)
Mxzx JAN 10, 05:09 PM
Does anyone know what amount of free play the clutch lever should have with the slave cylinder removed? I noticed mine has 3/4" before engaging, and I am not able to get car in gear. Wondering if I damaged the clutch release bearing or shift fork shaft?

It's a V8 car with Spec clutch if that matters.

Thanks

Even when the engine's not running?

The free play (no slave installed) is not an issue. All manual transmission Fieros do the same thing.

The important measurement is after the slave is installed and bled to remove all air in the system.

You should see about 1 3/4" of travel of the clutch arm, as it compresses the pressure plate springs to release clamping force on the clutch disc.

Thanks Joe, I'm gonna take some pics to better describe what is going on.

I am able to get it in all gears without engine running.

It appears to me that the slave rod is using most if its stroke just to cover the free play, leaving only 3/4" of effective travel of the clutch arm once the slave reaches full extension.

I have checked for bent pedal, bench bled and replaced master, rebuilt slave with Rodney kit, bled slave per Archie's instruction.

I really think I have broken the throughout bearing or shift fork, just hoping to not have to drop cradle, but I think its inevitable.

Salut!
You may have a worn clutch fork, which doesn't help for getting the max mouvement for clutch release and getting into gear.
I fixed mine with some careful welding:

So after doing one last "desperation" bleed, the clutch seems to be disengaging! Took it for a drive and all seems normal, must have had some air trapped somewhere that took this many times to get out?

I haven't gone back and measured the arm throw, I'm a little afraid to jinx it!

From years of experience, and dozens of clutch installs, they can be a pain in the keister.....

Yeah, it can be quite frustrating to fully bleed the system. I use a modified clutch master cylinder lid and a small foot pump to pressure force the fluid through the lines and slave cylinder. Just don't let the reservoir run dry while doing it!

A one gallon vacuum bleeder works well too.

That is what I was using with grease on the threads of bleeder. Still didn't get all the air out of slave I guess? Archie's procedure seems to get it, although I did have to come up with a one man version as I had no helpers!
