Hello!,
I have a 86 2.8 2M6 4speed with about 50k on it. Picked it up from northern MN for 500 with title. Guy said it worked but has a new transmission and has never really shifted correctly after getting new transmission.anyhoo Been working on it the last year. Lately I'm dealing with electrical issues. When I turn the key to on the fuel pump doesn't prime (new one installed from Fstore and verified by hard testing through the ALDV). I don't get the SES light which I've read on many threads means there's a short or ECM is fried. The wiring harness has some damage from mice and just going through the process of testing the wires for shorts etc. I also ran into this box under the steering wheel "" Googled it and its the cruise control. My question is can I just unhook this to alleviate one thing trying to decipher why the ECM is not working or does it need to be hooked up. Might seem like a dumb question but I figured I'd ask. Also, when i turn the key on I get power at the fuse box in every one EXCEPT INST 5 amp box. would this cause the SES not to illuminate as well? I know I got lots of work ahead of me.
Thing wrong ECM not working NO POWER in fuse box "INST" 5 amp Ignition (instrument panel lamps, headlamp, warning Transmission- new Transmission? they never really told us which one is in it but they gave me the old one Only shifts from top to bottom, does not move side to side Mice chewing up wiring harness The right starts up and runs for 3 seconds oil pressure, volts, and tach work normally all the inline wire fuses are still good Fuel pump relay good Fuel pressure in the 40's while cranking it
New fuel tank/sending unit new Alternator spark plugs/wires distributer Clutch pedal/slave and master cylinder rotors, calipers

Welcome! Lots of questions, but I'll deal with this one. Disconnect the side to side (select) cable at the transmission and see if you can now move the shifter, and/or see if the lever on the transmission will move. I suspect the problem is a corroded select cable, but it's possible the shifter was/is in need of adjustment as well. If you post an image of how the cables attach to the transmission, someone here should be able to confirm which transmission you have. I suspect it's the Muncie 4-spd.

Thanks Patrick, I attached photo of the cable/atttachment. I did get a chance to disconnect the side to side wire and the cable moved abotu a quarter inch both ways but the mechanism is jammed and I will have to take apart. So I think i solved that one. Thanks!

Bought a new ECM off ebay, plugged it in and when I turned the key to the ON the sending unit primed!. I cranked it and it fired right up, idles a little low but don't have the air manifold on. I also have not swapped the PROM yet. I still didn't get any instruments like SES light brake etc so something in still funky. I do get Oil pressure and volts. I do get door chimes and overhead light when door is open. I was also able raise and lower the transmission "side to side" rod and put into all gears when I disconnected the cable. either cable is jammed or the shifting mech will need to be addressed (very rusty needs it anyways). I have one other question currently,...where does this go? the cable go's to the transmission and plugs in the top and there is a little branch I can't figure out where it go's. Could this have been plugged into the old orig transmission? its very dirty. Thanks!!! everyone

That's the connector for the backup light switch on the 5-speed Getrag 282 transmission.
Standard transmission 1986 V6 Fieros came with this connector, even the Fieros with the 4-speed Muncie that didn't need it.
