removing alternator with bracket question 4 speed (Page 1/2)

Long story short. 85 gt v6 4 speed........I broke the head off the top pivot bolt and have no choice but to remove the alternator with the bracket...I understand the 4 speed has way more room then the auto but....Am I still looking at a complete nightmare? and does anyone have any advice before I tackle this? I have a new alternator and bracket on the way.. Im replacing because the pulley is so rusted its eating belts. Its so rusty the grooves are completely non existent..sucks because the alternator does work...The car has been sitting for 20 years and finally got it running... I did anticipate this issue and still through a belt on for the hell of it just because I needed to hear it run..I ran it around the block and already smoked a brand new belt...

It's not a nightmare, but it's not super easy, either.
The assembly has to be rotated properly to be removed, and the right toe link needs to be separated from the knuckle.

I completely agree with that technique Ive stumbled across a few comments about doing it that way...is that the only way with the 4 speed? so many mixed messages because of the auto/manual trans difference.

I've found them easy to remove while in the junkyard, even with the bracket attached, as long as they aren't an automatic. There's a wide spot there in the crossmember. You still have to turn it the right way to snake it out.

My own Fiero is an automatic and removing even just the alternator is a lot of work.

reason im asking is because if I bust that tie rod end off I will have to replace it along with the other side then...Im just trying to get this puppy on the road to safely flip...It's becoming borderline might as well keep it situation...I just the scaling rust that has formed...everything is so crusty underneath..I see brake lines in my near future they are just........My 86 SE florida caris another story I could eat off the frame..This car was sitting underneath a pool solar cover for 20 years..

Thank you CSS. my new alternator just arrived as im sitting here and it came with a 6 groove pulley....If i just make sure to put the belt on the first 5 tight to alternator will I survive? my new belt sits beautifully in it groove wise..

Well Great news. I dropped the alternator with the bracket out the bottom between the CV axle and the trunk and it basically just fell out. Completely surprised!!!! so now I'm just waiting for my bracket and new top bolt and we should be golden!!!!

Awesome! Glad it worked out. It had been so long since I worked on a manual Fiero, so I was going through my own self-doubts, like maybe did I forget someone already had removed the axle? I'd have felt bad if I led anyone astray with advice I had mis-remembered.
