1984 Fiero Sail Panels - Refinishing? (Page 1/1)

Hey guys, I picked up a set of 1984 sail panels... which as those of you know, are the only year where they're made of glass. The set that I have, one of them is faded... specifically, the paint has faded. Even though it looks glossy (because it's glass) it's become somewhat gray. I wanted to ask... has anyone ever reconditioned these? The rubber / plastic and metal frame is in great shape. The glass is not cracked. It's just the paint underneath that's faded. I wanted to know if it's as simple as scraping the paint off the glass (using a razor or some kind of paint stripper) and then simply re-painting it. I didn't want to touch them without asking others first...

Thanks!

Some are glass not all.

As for painting the backside, not sure if this can be done as the glass would have to be removed from the frame and I am not sure you can do that without damaging the frame or cracking the glass.

I think you're right Mickey... I think that's probably the biggest issue. Honestly, the glass ones are really, really nice. They tend to look classier (when in good repair) to the rest of the year sail panels of the coupe body. They maintain their shine better, and don't craze or crack. But I did notice it wasn't exactly easy to remove the glass either... so that's probably an issue. Definitely looks like it's painted from the back...

Well... if I figure it out, I'll post instructions if it comes out nice... otherwise... well, you'll see my Pinterest fail...

There was a thread about removing the glass and using them on a later model. The OP said that he needed to cut off a plastic trim strip to remove the glass. Then he simply used 3M tape to install the glass in place of his plastic sail panels. It sounds like you have to ruin your set just to remove the glass.
