I’m wanting to remove the spoiler wing on my 87GT. I see that vette panel adhesive seems to be the product of choice for working on SMC panels. My question is, should I mix up some shredded pieces of fiberglass matte into the panel adhesive as a strength member inside the holes or os the vette panel adhesive alone strong enough to fill the holes?

Sand the edges of the holes to create a bevel. Use tape on the inside of the decklid to cover the holes then fill them from the outside. You can add some cut up fiberglass if you like but generally the Vette panel adhesive is strong enough on it's own. Once dry you can remove the tape.

Are you planning on doing anything with the spoiler? They were very Countache-ish for the time... and a lot of people are looking to upgrade and install those old Fiero spoilers on Fieros that didn't come with them. There's decent money for the wing stantions and the spoilers on eBay. If you aren't planning on keeping it, definitely sell it and don't throw it away.

Good Info...thank you Yeah my plan was to bevel out the top and underside with 24 grit. Filling from the top with the bottom taped.....then once dry, remove the tape and skim the bottom to better fill the bevel....then block sand it to blend it with the body of the car.

I'm definitely not going to throw it away. I'll probably put it with the rest of my Fiero extras stash to possibly use at a later time. I do like the look of the spoiler on certain years/colors/models. It's just not working on my current project for the look I'm going for.

I know Fieros are not fiberglass, but I thought fiberglass would work for small holes like deleting the wing.
I am not a body man but I am going to delete the wing and the radio antenna.

prob so...I happened to have some vette panel adhesive/filler but didn't know if it was necessary to add some strands of fiberglass for a strength member in that small of a hole. In essence, using the vette panel adhesive to make some kitty hair for the open hole.
The front fender isn't SMC...it's RIM. I'm not sure if the vette panel adhesive will work on that or not. I would think something like SEM 39767 would work on the fenders, bumpers and doors.

Wouldn't it be easier to find another decklid? It will need painted anyway.

Probably so….but I already have everything to do the body work including the paint. Plus I’d have to track one down locally and hope it doesn’t need body work. Then purchase it for $100 or so….then store the old one. I’d rather spend a couple hours filling and sanding and not spending the extra change.
Unless you’re local to central alabama and have a wingless decklid that you’ll make me a deal on 🤣[This message has been edited by labbe001 (edited 02-16-2024).]
