I have a 1984 Fiere SE automatic. The idle is at 1500rpm and goes up and down by 2000-3000rpm it will idle like this for maybe 30-45 seconds and die. I can rev it up in park and it will stay running. If I put the car in drive and give it gas ,I get power for about 1-2 seconds and then nothing at all, it will idle in drive for about 15-20 seconds in drive then die. Vacuum hoses seem fine and connected. Any suggestions? ------------------ Tony Ferguson

Are there any error codes in the ECM? Check the TPS voltage, common thing to fail, and it can give some symptoms like that, especially on the 4cyl. The v6 can kindof just cough/stumble through the issues when the TPS goes bad, but the weaker 4 cyl is more likely to stall, especially when paired with a constant drag, like an automatic that is in gear.

Fluid Level need the AT Hot in Park & Engine Running to read the stick. Engine have problems & can't idle or drive long enough to follow the rules printed on AT dipstick.
Engine problems that idles wrong isn't related to trans problems... look for more vac leaks see https://web.archive.org/web...ierocave/vacleak.htm------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.
