timing without the adld plug??? (Page 1/2)
Superm1952 APR 07, 04:57 PM
So I solved my no start with new distributor with a new coil started right up NOW for the timing. Since this is in a countach kit v6 86 gt base. I cannot locate the plug to short out the two terminals due to a solid center console that I do not know how to get out. I can get to the ecm because it has a removable cover. Is there a way to base time this without shorting the adld plug??? Thanks in advance

No.

ECM Will set Timing even @ idle making adjusting by hand near impossible.
1 micro sec is 30+° next is 0° even retarded & timing light flashes "@ random" & useless.

If you adjust any other way & get "idle right" likely have mess this up & cause other problems like glowing exhaust is a result wrong timing, running lean or both.

Coming from the OGRE its gospel!! Not what I wanted to read. Well I guess I will have to R&R the interior to try and find it!!! Is there a possibility that as someone else said they never wired it in LOL right?!!! Thanks very much Doctor Skip

If you have a scanner, you can let the engine idle and see what the commanded timing is.
Then you can check your timing on the balancer and adjust to make the two match.

If you run out of marks for the timing on the pointer tab, you can add a mark 10 degrees advanced to get a mark that reads with the timing cover marks.

I think what he was trying to ask is if he can jump it at the ECM. The wires go from the connector to the ECM, of you have a schematic, and know what wires they are, you could bridge then at the ECM instead of at the connector.

Alternatively, you could find the bundle of wires going to that connector, and pull it to see if it is fastened to anything, the wire is only a few feet long, if it is fastened, tough luck, if not, you can pull it out, starting at the ECM, and use it like normal, then stuff it back in.

I strongly suspect you'll find the ALDL plug somewhere in the center console.

Read the post...

He can't remove the Console or parts of it because some iffy "customizing" so can't find ALDL very likely can't get @ ECM too. (I read still read wrong.)
If can get @ ECM, find 1 wire & ground that to be same. Find FSM or buy Alldatadiy.com for a year. Make sure that wire goes to 1 pin. Some wire look sim to others unless you look careful.

If still have ALDL plug Maybe they moved behind a seat, under air vents if have air vent in poorly "custom" job but more likely ignore that & still close or @ OE location.
Even if can see ECM thru whatever Vents, the Plugs for that is another store depending where they are... some are on bottom of ECM & you can't get @ the wires.

My guess the ECM has Heat Problems for same reason because little or no air flow to cool the ECM. ECM Generates A Lot of Heat using case as heat sink & have problems even w/ OE Console.

SOOOOOO........ I ended up removing the seats and center console that was installed over the Fiero Tunnel. The ECM is easily accessed through basically the same type cover as the Fiero glove box but easier. Upon removal of the console I found the ALDL connector zip tied to the main harness that runs up the tunnel as well as the cigarette lighter plug. It was a nightmare to lift the console up...I had to remove shifter knob, the gated plate along with slightly lifting the dash to pull the console back to the rear of the car and lift it up on an angle. YYYYYY would someone zip tie such an important connector where no one could access it. The pigtail and connector is long enough to put up along side the ECM with length to spare, I thank each and everyone of you Fiero gurus for the help with this nightmare!!!! I guess its a good time to clean the carpets as well as condition the seats while there is SOOOOO much room in the car without the seats. Thanks guys Skip

Excellent to hear Skip.
You have fixed the problem for the next time the timing needs to be set.

And you're getting the interior cleaned up for the upcoming car shows!

If you found the ALDL connector, I would cut a hole to bring the wire through so I didn't have to dig it out again... Or extend the wires to get it up under the dash like a modern car....
