Hi. New to the forum and Fieros. Just got a 88 Formula with stock everything. Tires are dangerously bad and I don't like the wheels so want to replace both. I'm not a tire guy and am getting stuck in decision lock with the options.
It currently has 16" 225 front 245 rear. I like the wide width on the back...looks good. I was thinking of going up to 17" for looks but would consider 18 if that has better fitment. Not racing or anything, will just be an occasional use car and I'd like some performance out of it just for fun cornering. I don't care if the speedometer is a bit off.
Don't want anything that will rub or otherwise cause headaches.
Just because that it what is on there I was just going to keep the 225/245 setup but with 17/18 staggered.
Looking at the following wheels Front:Motegi MR116 Black 17x7 40 MR11677031740 Rear:Motegi MR116 Black 18x8 45
Or
Vors SP1 17x8 +35 SP01178010H35MB
No idea what looks good or performs well. I've read a bunch of old posts but get recommendations all over the place. Someone help me pull the trigger on this decision so I can get to driving!
PS- I'm a cheap bastard so less expensive option is always a bonus!

I'll let the 88 guys chime in but the wheels are different offsets for the front and back on the 88. This is from another thread

Below is a link to a thread on PFF that has a diagram that may also prove helpful. http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/058236.html
Below is a link to a web site that will allow you to compare the stock wheel & tires to what ever wheel & tire that you are thinking of buying. http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp
Also I have a 1988 GT. Before I upgraded to coilovers, I had the the following wheels & tires with a completely stock suspension.
. .Wheels 16x7" +48. . BBS RG-F wheels (Front & Rear) . .Front tires 225/50-16 tires . .Rear tires 245/50-16 tires I had no problems with the tires rubbing any where.
I hope the above info proves helpful. If you still have questions you might drop a PM to either Boozberry, or Fieroguru here on PFF. They are two of the most knowledgeable guys on PFF.
I wish you Good Luck in your search.

No "idiot" to it. Aftermarket wheels for an 88 are a confusing PITA.
My "ideal" setup for an 88 is 17s. 17x8, 35mm offset in the rear. 17x7, 40-48mm in the front. My tire sizes are 235/45-17, and 215/45-17. I chose those sizes years ago, as they are very close to the same diameter as the stock GT/Formula tires. I have used 245/45-17s in the rear with good success, too.
With that said... one of my cars has 17x7, 35mm offset on the front, and 17x8.25, 35mm offset in the rear. Tires are 215 and 235, as mentioned above. I'll post some pics of that one, as I had a lot of misgivings about the offsets, but it worked out okay.
Another trick that I have found... If the front of the car is lowered a bit (I have at least one coil cut off of all my front springs) it tends to tuck the wheels into the fenders a bit. Or it at least gives that illusion. 88s sit too high in the front, anyway, IMHO.
Edit - All the sizes that I have mentioned/used will work fine with a stock suspension.
This is what it looks like from the side.

Okay. You've got me started, now. This one has 17x7, 38mm in the front, and 17x8, 35mm in the rear. Same tire sizes as posted above. (I don't own this car anymore, but the wheels are on a white car, similar to it. This one just shows the offsets better.)
Here's 17x7, 48mm offset and 17x8, 35mm offset, Same size tires. Front springs are cut by 1.25 coils, so it sits kind of low.
Apologies for all the gratuitous posting. I hope this helps a bit.[This message has been edited by Raydar (edited 04-24-2024).]

Thanks for all of the help. The wheels I was looking at only came in +35 so I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a set of 7/+35s. I'll know how they look in a few weeks. Thanks again for the responses and photos. It is always stressful buying wheels because they are expensive and not able to be returned.

I just want to mention- go with the lightest wheels you can afford....Back in 2009 I swapped up from 15" cheap wheels to 16 x 7 Voxx Monzas (No longer made) which were actually 3 lbs lighter....also went from 215/60s on the front down to 205/55 so I lost an additional 3 lbs off each front wheel/tire.
The car went from driving like a truck to driving much more like a modern sports car. The tires I now swear by are General G-Max AS-05...they are 2-4 lbs lighter than others (Especially BFGs) and rate well in performance testing on TireRack....
The diameters are 24.8" Front (205/55-16) and 25.74" (225/55-16) As far as width, consider that my Fiero weighs 2600 lbs vs a C8 which weighs over 3700 lbs- so using that ratio (1:1.42) 205 = 290 on the Vette, and 225 = 320......

Thank you sir. It is, indeed, the factory Medium Red Metallic - aka burgundy. Kind of tired and faded, at this point. It looks like the paint code is WA9077. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm mistaken.
