Wipers run before fluid is sprayed? (Page 1/1)

Not sure if it's normal on these old cars, but I noticed when I press the button forward on the stalk to "Mist" to spray washer fluid, the wipers instantly move before the pump even has time to spray the windshield. So it dry wipes the first time.

Is this normal behaviour on a Fiero? I rarely get phantom wipes, maybe 3 times over the last 5 years or so. And the delay works too. Thanks peeps.

Normal.

In most cars, Mist won't run the pump. Only the washer "arm" does that. Mist just cycles the motor for 1 wipe or have to hold it On. Wash limits Delay systems to ~ 4 wipes after last push on the switch.

Pump likely runs but needs time to fill the lines to get pressure to spray.
Is why Fiero and others have a check valve in the line so fluid can't drain. Most "old" pumps didn't this built into them.
see https://web.archive.org/web.../~fierocave/wipe.htm @ bottom.

But...
The valve is bad or crap keeping it open.
The valve is missing after someone filled the tank w/ water or fluid then froze in winter blew the case apart.

Is why I tell most do not use "summer" fluid, bug wash, etc unless going to empty/flush the tank before get cold weather. "Winter" formulas have Methanol to stop freezing in the tank & lines, some have Ethylene Glycol to the mix to prevent freezing on the glass after sprayed.
Is actually more of a problem now because many current models take whole gallon of fluid when washer light goes On in the dash or simply stops working & can't see the tank but the "tube" to fill it.

⚠️ By now, some places only sell "summer" fluids because doesn't have any or not much alcohol to comply for Low/No VOC rules in many states.
If you use this now in spring many can empty a tank by fall & won't be a problems but do this in August then often will freeze in many states in fall or winter.

Is why many can't/won't use Washer concentrates or tablets because no alcohol.
