getrag 5 speed mods (Page 1/3)

so I'm thinking about modifying the transmission in my gt to be more of a dog box eventually. now I know these are pretty weak on the shift shafts with high rpm which might be an issue for the dream build I have in mind. so does anyone have a parts list or guide on how to strengthen these up before I go hog wild with a hole saw and reamer to shove much larger honda shift shafts in (have a few sitting around and they are ~14 mm in diameter and were taken out of a case that litterally exploded from the abuse but these lived) and then make custom syncros to handle being synchronized at much higher rpm

I run a Getrag with a fairly modded engine so I am always worrying about gearbox failure.
What's this idea with the shift shafts?
Most people seem to say that the Getrag case around the differentiel just can't hold the torque and cracks/explodes!
I don't rev over 6500rpm.

something I've read about them when shifted particularly fast and hard. not sure how much truth there is to that. will keep the gear case in mind since I plan on trying to rev to 9k rpm with some custom parts. so I'll go ahead and throw together a brace for the case around there though I do know someone with a 3800 sc with a getrag that has taken some beating but eats syncros alive so maybe the gear case is thicker in that area or has less oxide mixed in. I'll have to start doing more research on it

Too much torque shoves the intermediate shaft through the case and into the bell housing.

Perhaps you would be better off with a stronger transmission, such as an F40, the Muncie 4 speed, or an F23....

money is the main issue. the new upgraded syncros would be almost free and I can beef up a trans case with some custom braces and sheet metal I have lying around for quicker and cheaper than a new transmission at current moment.
also since I've been messing with hondas too much lately for a friend's build, the f23 is what transmission?

F23 is a 5 speed trans out of newer cavaliers, sunfires etc. It's a pretty strong transmission compared to the stock getrag.

What is the failure history of Getrag gear boxes? You can break anything if you beat on it hard enough.

In terms of strength, the 4 speed Muncie is the strongest, the Isuzu 5 speed is the weakest, and the Getrag 5 speed is in the middle somewhere.
The 84 4 speeds have a weak case, but external bracing has been used successfully behind built small block Chevys.

They also can be had for just a couple hundred bucks. And they will have been driven a lot fewer miles than most any Getrag you are likely to run across.

Yes, even here in France we can find F23s and F40s second hand for about 250€ to 350€.
Alot of them come out of Saabs and Opels. Does anyone know if they have the same bellhousing pattern?
This one for exemple is only 115€ on Ebay france:

Seems like the starter motor fixing is totally different?
