87GT 5spd. SES light came on setting codes for the speed sensor and EGR. Prior to that, I was having Intermittent trouble with the cruise control not engaging. Light turned on while driving at freeway speeds, and the speedometer was working normally.
Has anyone else experienced this? What was the solution?

ECM setting that means... Speedo is partly or total dead. VSS "dead" & Speedo doesn't work too.

If the Vehicle Speed Sensor is going bad... you'll have a problem. It seems to be one of the only things that absolutely isn't reproduced anywhere. They're getting harder and harder to find, also...
It's held in by one screw on the transmission.
EGR would be a whole other thing.

The Fiero VSS talks directly to the buffer device on the speedometer board, the buffer drives the Speedo at 4000ppm and sends a 2000ppm signal to the ECU and Cruise Control.
I suspect the buffer device on the speedometer board.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Guess I’ll need to pull out the factory manual and follow the diag. tree. Was hoping you’d all say….”operating as designed” hahaha. I have another cluster, thankfully. But my orig gauge needles are still nice and bright orange. Hate to have to swap a needle or repaint a faded one.

Took a chance and drove it yesterday, couple hours....no SES light. I hate intermittent issues.

Check for loose wiring. If all else fails there should be a work around for the VSS. There are later transmissions that used a VSS that provided a different output. Some will bolt right in. Such items are used on engine/transmission swaps that use a variety of sensors with a small interface circuit to drive the Fiero speedometer. Going back to intermittent that still sounds like a loose connection.------------------ " THE BLACK PARALYZER" -87GT 3800SC Series III engine, custom ZZP /Frozen Boost Intercooler setup, 3.4" Pulley, Northstar TB, LS1 MAF, 3" Spintech/Hedman Exhaust, P-log Manifold, Autolite 104's, MSD wires, Custom CAI, 4T65eHD w. custom axles, Champion Radiator, S10 Brake Booster, HP Tuners VCM Suite. You may still have the problem but didn't trip the Light because many errors have "rules" to set off the MIL/CEL.
Example: Doing some research years ago for 87+ DIS Dukes w/ more advance ECM, I had change the "Chip" in ECM from FWD car & knew VSS programing was different from another model so ECM never see VSS during testing that you think should had MIL On all the time but No. Only turn On the MIL for seconds & @ what are random times to any driver.
Even read the FSM for "VSS problems" often doesn't help. Need a ECM Scanner to look @ the speed the ECM reads.
If speedo "works" but ECM say 0 MPH when should say same... Speedo or ECM have problems or iffy wiring between them can do same thing.[This message has been edited by theogre (edited 07-05-2024).]
