Weird Ignition Coil (Page 1/1)
88Fingers JUL 04, 01:37 PM
Hey guys and gals, On my '88 GT 2.8 V6 5 speed project car, someone installed the MSD ignition box system and the coil connection is 4 inline instead of the stock square connector points. Just wondered if anyone knows what coil this would be and can I convert it back to stock? Thank you.

If you have an MSD Blaster 45k volt coil; it has a higher voltage than the factory 30k volt coil and "yes" - you can 'lose' the MSD ignition control module and go back to 'stock'.

Thank you Vintage Nut, I need to figure out what the inline connector is then splice the original style back in I guess

Please post a picture if you can...

FYI, unless you absolutely need to go back to stock, I will say that an MSD ignition box can help in a lot of ways:

- Improve idle
- Improve fuel economy
- Improve performance in mid to upper RPMs

Look @ the coil & see if has logo, part #, etc &/or just post a pic.

Likely the coil could be reused w/o MSD hype box. HEI, Ford TFI & many others are about same system w/ minor changes but just different names for Marketing, TM under USPTO rules, etc. IOW... HEI & some use magnet triggers, Other use optical triggers to replace Points but high volt side hasn't change much on any engine w/ distributor.

Many Install it believe the hype that MSD box is "Better." Not.
Others hope "solve problem(s)" w/ OE setup never bothering to find the real root cause & now has MSD w/ same or more problems.
Worse many put the box in the trunk or other places that won't cool it, worse heat it, or both. Trunk doesn't move air to cool + trunk air is often heated to 100°F or more now they put a thing that generates heat it must dump & can't so guts are pushing 150-180°F or more that kills many electronic parts.

Example: Many blame the GM ICM design but often they die for other reasons like missing a heat shield, has exhaust leaks &/or iffy things when done to install the ICM. Then install MSD hype box...

If you don't have the MSD ignition install instructions; perhaps you'll find them on the internet....

Thank you all. The red box is in the trunk. The car starts and runs fine but I am getting a hesitation after up-shifts now and I wondered if it could be coil related. I need to check all the other ignition parts too when I get a chance. The coil connector just seemed odd to me.
