Yesterday I started changing the spark plugs on our '86 2.5 5-speed. Did not finish, because the wire tore off and out of the plug-end terminal and boot on the #2 wire, and the boot started to tear on the #3. I stopped at the front two plugs before things got any uglier. So, I am prepared (tools and experience) to roll my own wires from a kit. Does anyone have information on build-em-yourself plug wire sets, either really great ones to work with even after they're installed or ones to run screaming from because they're so crummy? Thanks in advance - Chris

had good luck with the orielly yellows that are 5 years old on a big block olds and before that I had them on a ford 289 v8 so those are alright but go very heavy on the dialectic grease on the boots. you can't have too much on the boots they give since they shrink overtime. no personal luck with autozone ones but that's probably because I kept melting them on my blazer trying to replace the custom rat chewed oriellys custom length ones It had

Making wires often don't last better then made by most factories. Making wires is only way to get new for some old or custom vehicles & some race engines.
Making them right is more complicated then many think. Example: Many use generic crimp tool that crimp ends too tight or loose & ends Fail sooner then pre-made.
Magnecor 7mm is enough for most users but there web store say no 4050, 4750 or 4550 so need to email etc,------------------ Dr. Ian Malcolm: Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should. (Jurassic Park)

The factory spark wires are 7mm.....If you want to use the stock plastic spark wire dividers, don't buy 'bigger' wires.

Thanks to all who have chimed in so far. All valid concerns, ogre. But after messing up on my first couple of sets, 40+ years ago, my MSD terminal crimper has folded countless terminals on as many feet of wire flawlessly. Since those first two sets, I've not had a wire fail due to a faulty crimp or improper assembly. What I HAVE had is enough wire sets "made to fit" that would not work right out of the box that I would just as soon build my own from a set that would let me get the length and routing correct. As to the dividers/retainers, I'm spending enough time on the lathes and milling machines at work that I believe I could make my own for whatever wire diameter I want to use. By the way, fierosound, those engine rooms are beautiful works of art! Your own work?
