Mysterious original(?) decal (Page 1/2)
saving_rossi AUG 15, 05:40 PM
When I bought my 1985 2m6, I was told that the decals on the sides (faded) were original. It was garaged since 1992, so they hadn’t fully disintegrated. I took all of this with a grain of salt, and I haven’t been able to find evidence of these decals on any other fiero.

I might just not know where to look. It’s a comic-book-style stripe rear to nose on both sides.

There were a lot of "graphics packages" that were offered by dealerships throughout the years. These were custom graphics that didn't come from the factory, but that were installed by the dealership.

My Fiero has something similar, but is basically a pin-stripe that runs the whole length of the side of the Fiero on both sides. It then has this little weird pinstriping deal that looks like a treble clef that surrounds the Fiero logo in the front.

Some of these graphics were literally and painted (like mine), and others were stick-on graphics. They'd pre-print them and then have someone come and install them at the dealership. Many big area dealerships even added names for these packages. If I'm not mistaken, there was actually one graphics package (other than Indy) that was made available... I can't remember. I think it's in Mark Corbin's Fiero Spotter's guide... but either way, most of these are no longer available. You could try to get someone like Phoenix Graphix to make a set if it's mostly complete on your car already.

It would be interesting to see a shot of the whole side of the car.

Interesting - I didn't know these things typically came from the dealership. I guess that's a good way to get a buyer to buy from you and not somebody else.

So this might be another example from an 84 (nothing as interesting as that dot matrix bar on saving_rossi's car)

Funny thing with mine, the "2M4" badge on the trunk was missing and had extra pinstripes covering that area. I don't seem to have a picture of that. I could still see the faded impression of "2M4" underneath though.
I don't know if that impression would have existed if it was taken off when the car was new, so maybe those pinstripes on mine were added years later. Which is kind of weird since it wasn't repainted (the paint was badly faded with those pinstripes on it when I got it in 1996).

Usually (almost definitely) at substantial markup, It was a profit generator for the dealer.

The local dealer here (Jerry Haggerty Chevy) used to offer pinstriping on their cars.... I don't know what a customer would have to do to avoid the pinstriping; buy the car as soon as it comes off the truck I suppose. Otherwise everything on the lot eventually wound up with pinstriping. They even had some with a little "Jerry Haggerty Edition" logo included with the pinstriping! I can't imagine that being real popular.

Easiest way to remove decals/pinstriping is with an Eraser Wheel.

That’s so interesting. My plate retainers say John link Oregon city on them, I guess that’s the original dealer. I am learning so much

Hmmm... I'm not sure what happened with your uploaded images. From what I can see, I quite like the decals. I wouldn't mind something like that on my Formula.

Man, I miss the 80s... I mean, I was just a kid... but damn it was a cool time. They just don't do gawdy graphics on cars like that anymore. That kind of stuff was all the rage back then, and it looked cool.

I still remember the very first time I saw a Fiero GT. I was in a parking lot with my mom getting ready to pick my brother up from a pizza joint where he was hanging out with his buddies (trying to act older)... and I saw one in the parking lot... I noticed the "back window" didn't go to anything, but actually went to the engine area, which was also open... and I remember putting my hand on the other side and thinking how neat and novel of an idea it was to have a fake window in the car...

The Fiero was gold, that's all I remember... and honestly, I think it was probably 1986 that I saw it. But I obsessed over it for a long time, and I remember being devastated two years later when they announced on the news that the Fiero was being cancelled (I was 10 at that point). The idea that you could buy a used car made no sense to me, as my parents had always bought new cars. So... I assumed I'd never be able to own one. I put it out of my mind... and then 7 years later... my uncle is like... "Hey Todd, I have a Fiero that I'm thinking of selling, do you want to buy it?" ... and the rest is history.
