which pin or rod for the master cylinder for the S10 Booster upgrade (Page 1/1)

ok

I ordered the s10 brake booster from Summit Racing AND Rodney's kit and I ordered BOTH rods that extend the rod that goes from the BACK of the booster through the firewall and to the brake pedal. Double checked the instructions and measured twice that the CORRECT extension was used. Okay that part settled.

NOW the question is on the other side there is a rod or pin that goes from the front of the booster to the back of the master cylinder. The s10 booster came with a rod and of course my old OEM booster had a rod.

WHEN installing the s10 booster do I use the OEM rod or pin that goes from the front of the booster to the master cylinder or the rod or pin that came with the new S10 booster from Summit Racing ?

I am having an incredibly difficult time getting the front brakes bled and the whole job is becoming a very unpleasant memory and if I have this kind of trouble with this car being out of service this long it may be time to move on to another car. The symptoms are suggesting that the pin or rod that was shipped with the S10 booster from Summit Racing may be the wrong length and thus making the master cylinder not function as intended.

I spoke with Rodney and again we double checked that we used the correct extension on other side from the rear of the booster through the firewall to the brake pedal etc.

Rodney suggested that I ask the forum this question above.

I found a thread that did not make clear what the answer to the question was. So also I wasnt sure if asking this question was better posted here.

Regarding the brake booster pin - which one is longer? are they pretty much the same?

When I put a new '87 Fiero booster on my '88, I had the same question. But they come out easily and so can be compared easily. There was a slight difference between my original and the one from the '87 booster. The original one is about 0.040" longer. Since I have more free play than I like, I didn't think twice about using the longer of the two, especially since the difference was almost nothing. Unless the two you have are of vastly different lengths, I'd say try the longer one.

Of course, if you really want to know, read this:
The Benefits of Booster Pin Depth Gauges

A booster pin gauge can be found easily on Amazon and other places.

if the brakes won't bleed when left open (like undo the banjo bolt) then the booster to master rod is too long
do check the proportioning valve though

Most likely you have collapsed flex hoses, remove the banjo bolt from the calipers, Does the Fluid run out quite freely? probably doesn't, replace all 4 flex hoses, they are cheap on Rock Auto.
