Had a bunch of work done recently, I noticed these two metal canisters, are they resistors? Are they standard? 1986 SE v6 auto.

Thanks. I see two of them there... there should only be one, right?
Hafta see where the other one is connected to...
Also, is this is a passive monitoring of the rpms? ( a 'bad' filter' would only affect the gague, but not the engine's performance?)[This message has been edited by TheDigitalAlchemist (edited 08-21-2024).]

Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see 2, all I see is the one tach filter (black cylinder with a rusty metal mounting strap around the center), if that's what you're talking about, then that's normal, and just one component.

In the first image, there is one "Vertical" in the middle, and then a second one is horizonal, a bit lower down near the metal cooling tube...

Usually there's only one... but lucky you... you've got a breeding pair!

I believe there's a possibility if the tach filter goes bad that it can negatively affect the ignition system.

I forget whether we've discussed this previously... but judging from the rubber snorkel on your intake, your Fiero has never had the recall work performed.[This message has been edited by Patrick (edited 08-21-2024).]

Yeah, quite possible. The rubber strip is there.
I brought the car to the shop about four months ago, total lack of power... Felt like a clogged CAT, and it was... so they replaced it. (I didn't want to just "cut and clamp", I know that's fine, it worked when I did it on another one back in '02. but I figured if they could weld it in there, it would be better. They found some other issues, and I said they might as well do that stuff. But it became more and more things - broken manifold bolts, a bunch of other stuff. they repaired it all, price was reasonable for the amount of work that they did...and I drove it home and then noticed a coolant leak. Brought it back, and then, the "fun" began. One thing after another - the guy working on the car got sick (it sucks, he is a swell MR2/Fiero guy) and they ended up getting another engine for parts and such and in the end they didn't charge for anything (which is kinda nuts< I stopped by a few times and I saw the engine and the work they were doing...) I drove it home, and things seemed ok....BUT... the next day, its acting like I have a vacuum leak or something. wild fluctuations and it wants to die immediately when I put it in reverse. Haven't had time to look at it at all, hafta check the sensors to see if anything obvious is going on... Fun...
