Blemished Tail Light Refinishing (Page 1/2)
HVLPgeek AUG 27, 10:34 AM
Hey Guys!

It was mentioned to me that there was once someone in the Fiero community that offered refinishing on the reproduction blemished tail light lenses.

I'm an automotive painter and work directly with the folks over at FieroMotive here in central florida, and Trent passed off a set of blemished lenses to see what I could do with them.

I then realized that removing the faulting coating on the inside of the lens was going to be near impossible, I decided that repainting and flow coating the outside of the lens was the best option for these.

So after refinishing the interior components of the lights, I installed the lenses and painstakingly hand masked all of the letters and around the lens.

Spayed the black basecoat and then 2 coats of high solids clearcoat. Let that cure for 24 hours and then sanded the clearcoat to removed the raised edges from the masking of the letters. After 2 more coats of clear, everything leveled out nice.

Let me know what you guys think.

Those look absolutely amazing!!!

I don't have a GT, but if I did, I'd be sending you over my taillight lenses ASAP...

I assume they have to be "crack free," right?

Incidentally, the stock Fiero taillights for the non GT models... they were actually painted by the factory externally.

I'm interested... do you have a price in mind? I have a set that I'd very much like to have refinished (non-GT Fiero taillights).

Thank you!

RGR, will do. I'm leaving for a flight in a couple of hours, but I'll text you when I get back. My parents actually live fairly close to you, so I would be able to drop them off and pick them up if that's OK with you (next time I visit them). It's also where my Fiero has been secretly in storage for 13 years, haha...

I have a thread over in the FAQ section about refinishing these. I started doing this back in 2009 and did a lot of restores for people on here.

You actually CAN remove the delaminated black portion but it's a real time consuming thing. I did a set with custom lettering after removing the black portion. I used my vinyl cutter to replicate the letters for masking:
