Smoking vents (Page 1/1) |

This issue recently started. About 1 minute into my drive I get a smell like leaves burning and then smoke out of the middle vents. I take the car back home, turn off the ignition and the smoke goes on for about two minutes. When the smoking in middle vents dies down the driver's side top vent starts up with smoke. This whole thing lasted for about two minutes. The car was recently checked out by a mechanic but couldn’t find the cause. Any ideas what it could be?

My 1st guess would be an oil leak getting on the exhaust (or something else hot).

Anyone and everyone who owns a Fiero should be aware that MICE love to climb up thru the drain ducts into the ventilation/heating/AC box and make nests....The heater fan has three resistor coils mounted in there to control the speed of the fan- they get >>HOT<< and if the mice have left their nest in there it can cause a fire.
Pull the fan and the resistor pack out immediately and check for debris!

You need to be more specific - smoke from the front or from the back?
Also helps if you post the year of the car and engine.

Yeah, that... and whether we're talking inside or outside the cab.

This is when I wish people who post on here would read their threads a little more often. It's been 1 day and that could mean the difference between saving the Fiero or losing the car and your entire house in a fire.

I wanted to respond to the original thread, but it was archived. For the car in the picture above, do we know if this person was able to restore it?
I mean, the important parts seem to be unaffected, and all the panels could just be put back on... or would a situation like this mean that the metal is now fatigued and warped?

Too fatigued and warped. Plus the entire interior has burned.....or so it appears.

I think we need a "FAQs & How tos" thread that explains some of the possible problems you can have for new owners- CRITICALLY, the mice-nest vent system, and the rear quarter panel/rockers which are not able to support the car.
If we had this type of thread ("New owners of Fieros intro") then we could link that for anyone who comes on here new.....Also, it would show up on 'net searches...
