Hey guys what is the best 17" wheel and tire size? Also the best backspace starting to look for wheels for my sons Fiero project

Wheel fitment is highly subjective. It starts with the year (84-87 and 88) as they are different. It is best to find a setup you like and then get the details of that setup.

My 88 runs 17x8 et45 front and 18x9.5 et45, but my car is more setup in the pro-touring style. Some like it, some like a more stock fitment.

Here's his setup. Keep in mind he has an 87 so if you have an 88, you'll have to get different offsets.

It's VERY smooth and doesn't hit the bump stops.

There is minimal clearance between the tire and the strut spring perch, (approx. a fingers width), in the rear and a on a VERY hard 90 degree corner the tire will rub the spring perch slightly. I have no rear sway bar yet so I think that will help eliminate that by reducing body roll, and I will probably also cut away a bit of the excess spring perch, (they are huge on the Gabriel struts), to get a tiny bit more clearance as well.

Thanks for the link guys. I would have guessed these were 17" wheels but look really well proportioned to the car. I have a good starting point. Ours is a 1986 and I am going to install a 1988 cradle with rear coil overs.

I can offer an opinion, but it really depends upon what your day-to-day goals are.
For anything other than an 88, if you want to be able to rotate your tires/wheels, I would do 17x7, Maybe 17x8, 35mm offset, with 225/45-17s on all four.
If not, there's lots of latitude.

I had an 84. With 17x8, 35mm, with 235/45-17s in the rear; and 17x7, 38mm, with 215/45-17s in the front. They fit perfectly.

Those wheels have been on several 88s, but I'll spare you, since that's not what you are asking about. (The 88 rear cradle will have very little to do with how the various wheels will look on the rear.)
