Coolant Spewing out of Overflow Tank (Page 1/1)

Hi everyone,

I recently replaced my radiator and my pinched coolant pipe (underneath passenger side). I flushed the coolant out of my car and put new coolant in. I had my heat on full blast and let it idle for about 35 minutes, I then drove it around and heard a spraying noise. I opened my front trunk and coolant is spraying out of the overflow tank and I believe its leaking inside the heater core because I saw coolant inside the car (passenger side floor). Is it possible to put too much coolant in that can make that happen? Could it just be too much air in the system, maybe I should have let it idle longer? This is the first time I have done this, definitely could be doing this wrong.

Also, smoke was coming out of my air breather (not an excessive amount) I believe its blowby. I did clean my IAC valve recently could that be it? or maybe its running so hot its burning carbon?

The Fiero requires a special procedure for replacing coolant to purge all of the air out of the system. First make sure that the overflow tank is half full. Take off the radiator cap, remove the thermostat and pour coolant in at the thermostat fill cap until coolant runs from the radiator top. Put the radiator cap back on and leave the thermostat out, Start engine for a minute or two until the coolant level goes down at the fill cap. Put fill cap back on. Run for a few minutes heater on but not to where the coolant gets to temperature. Remove cap fill again. Put back cap still without thermostat. Now run engine for ten minutes until warm . Wait until engine cools down completely. Remove cap fill again and put the thermostat back. Drive car for a few miles until warm. When it cools down again, top off coolant. I also drill a 1/8" hole in the thermostat flange that will help with the air purge.
