Exhaust Leak Y-Pipe (Page 1/1)

Hi everyone,

I have an 88' Fiero Formula V6, 2.8L. I recently discovered that there is a crack on the intersection of the Y-Pipe on my car. Is it doable to replace this pipe without dropping the engine? The screws that hold the pipe together are very rusty and I cannot get them off. What would be the best way to fix the leak? I have heard of using JB weld however I do not know how hot the pipe will get but I am sure it will just melt it off. Will heat wrap seal it? or should I grind the screws off and try to replace the pipe?

This is one of those things that's frustrating, because there's no GOOD way to do it easily. The proper thing to do is to carefully remove the bolts from the exhaust manifolds, and carefully remove the bolts from where it connects to the down-pipe.

You can definitely repair the old Y-Pipe and replace the hardware with new bolts (all of those are available via the Fiero Store)... BUT... if you're going to have all of that out, you might want to consider upgrading what you have.

West Coast Fiero has a performance-based stainless replacement... it's costly, but you can see that here: https://westcoastfiero.com/...04-stainless-y-pipe/

The Fiero Store used to carry replacement ones for the 88, but I don't see it on their website anymore... but you can get a used one probably fairly inexpensively from one of the online Fiero vendors (The Fiero Factory in Colorado, or Mike's Fiero Parts in Arizona). But... if this is a long-term keeper for you, you could go all-out and get a set of shorty headers from West Coast Fiero.

And the y-pipe can easily come out without dropping the engine/cradle, The trouble is with getting the bolts out, but once that's done, it can come out the top with a little manoeuvring.

IIRC the Fiero Store also sells a new V6 Y pipe

I looked, they only have 85-87 Y-Pipes left... no more 88 replacement Y-Pipes.

I may have an really good 88 Y pipe tucked away in the garage. Not sure if its still there but I will look. The problem will be shipping cost as these things are bulky and would require a large box.
UPDATE: Did a search of the garage and found no Y Pipes at all. Try Wayne Renninger, Cody Kline, or Mike Valentine. Those guys have tons of parts
