Trunk latch alternative (Page 1/1)

I have an 86 GT but the only replacement I can find for is $208

I was wondering if instead of that one I could use this

It looks pretty much the same but doesn't stick out quite as much I was wondering if the cheaper one would work

What's the correct part (#) for the fastback trunk lock cylinder? by Cliff Pennock

I was able to simply replace the old cylinder with the cylinder of the notchback lock. Took a bit of Dremel work to get the old cylinder out, but the new cylinders fits and works perfectly.

There may be a difference (I'm not 100% sure) between the trunk lock cylinder used for a fastback Fiero as opposed to a notchback Fiero. Hopefully someone here can fill in the details.

Mine looks like this "the 208$ one" and I'm wondering if the other thinner one would work the only difference that I know of is that the part that sticks out is not quite as long it doesn't look like it would be an issue but I'm just not sure

As yes, read Cliff's thread {in the link above} which shows the notchback trunk lock cylinder part numbers which won't fit the fastback.

Not sure what is wrong with yours but if I am remembering correctly you can just use the housing you have and the inner part ( that the key slides into) from the new one. Usually you can just recode the one you have unless someone destroyed it by driving a screwdriver into it.
