I’m dead in the middle of an F23 swap, a while ago I picked up a Muncie 4speed shifter assembly and missed it to have 5 speeds. It’s come to my attention that since it’s a Muncie and the F23 is a getrag, it won’t work.
Is this true? I want to know what the best option is for shifter assemblies that aren’t too expensive. And now I need to sell this Muncie shifter possibly.

It's my understanding that a 4-spd shifter can be modified to work as a 5-spd shifter.

I would give it a try.
The 4 speed and 5 speed shifter have the same cable mounts. The 2 big differences are:
- The 4 speed has a reverse lockout and reverse light switch built in - both of these can be removed and should be removed if running a 5 speed.
- The gate width (or side to side movement) of the 4 speed shifter is narrower than the 5 speed. This definitely is an issue when trying to use the 4 speed shifter with the F40 (4 gates vs. 3), but the 4 speed and 5 speed both have 3 gates. My first "swap" with a Fiero was swapping out the 4 speed muncie to the isuzu 5 speed. I was able to keep the 4 speed shifter, so there is a chance it might also work with the F23.
If you want to know it works before getting it fully installed, you can mock up the shifter, cables and transmission on the bench and row through the gears to verify if it will work.
If it does not work, then all you will need to do is to modify the 4 speed shifter by elongating the slot that limits the shifter side to side motion.[This message has been edited by fieroguru (edited 02-02-2025).]

This is good to know! I removed the spring and the reverse switch…I did a mock-up without the shifter bracket so it wasn’t perfect. I noticed there was an issue with side to side motion. I’m sure I can grind that out.
Thank you! Also I got my brackets from you a couple months ago on Facebook.Nice to see you on here.

I’m planning on using the Muncie shifter with my F23 transmission.
To reduce the feeling of shifter play in the Select direction, I think it is a good idea to keep a right-pushing spring in the shifter to take up the slack.
I will only use one centering spring in the transmission.

If you got them from facebook, it wasn't from me. I don't have a facebook account. Also, the only F23 part I sell is the clutch line connector.
