I’ve often wondered what people are doing when their old 2.8 eventually dies/blow up. Most often do an engine swap or find a used replacement. But what about the cores? Is there a good chain that takes cores for free? I just worry as these cars get older, finding rebuilt engines are going to be harder to obtain.

I would not give away my core for free. A recycle yard will pay something. A rebuilder should pay you something. Which there are many, everywhere.
I wonder what a running used Fiero 2.8 engine is worth. I am not going to do an engine swap until mine is toast but it only has 100,000 miles. Runs great. Regular maintenance.
