EV fires - ouch (Page 1/3)

I've seen 8 of them so far in the past two years on the main highway near us - two in the past few days... They burn uncontrollably, and end up destroying the road underneath them. I think most were Teslas. None seemed to be involved in an accident.

Here in Silicon Valley, it seems that just about every other car that I see is a Tesla. (Not me; I don't have a Tesla or other EV.)

I've not ever come across a Tesla that's caught fire, that I can remember.

The last time that I personally witnessed the smoke of combustion coming from a vehicle was when I witnessed a collision at an intersection. It was more than just "umpteen" years ago, and before there were any Tesla or any significant number of other EVs on the road—the last time that has stuck in my mind.

Probably involved in a little flood or has a crack in the battery. Just a drop of water starts that thermal runaway.

not on the LiFeP the far less burning chemistry
tesla even converted some models

That's pretty wild, in that Tesla has said only 40 cars were reported to have caught fire since production in 2012 with over 4 million on the road. 0.01% of the fleet.

One tracker has that number as 168 Teslas have caught fire, mostly due to accidents.

Seems very low, especially that the number of Fieros (260) .7% of the fleet that were reported to have caught fire that initiated the recall, no wonder it had a reputation of always catching fire.


For you to see 8 of them is crazy, considering how rare it is.

I thought so too... two of them were definitely Teslas, but now I'm looking at the front end of the Tesla and am realizing the others that were fully burned were some other car.

Number of Fires Do Not Matter!
Results of EV fires are way more problems.
IOW Most claim or confuse EV Fire Risk ≤ ICE Fire Risk but is simply Not True. Two Fires are Two Completely Different Classes in just about every way.

First, Just say that fire happens in open space on a highway, surface street, & related far from building, other cars, etc...

An ICE car burns, firemen responds & often put out just w/ water in the Fire Truck. Often ICE car fires are put out by hand held fire extinguishers or simply burn out before Firemen get there even when get there in Minutes.

EV burns for any reason, The Battery often "Goes Nuke" in Thermal Runaway & No amount of water, foam, or other agents can put that fire out & burns Way Hotter & for a longer time.

Now scale up to Big Trucks Burning in same spot...
Many times Firemen had HAZMAT problems because of Cargo but EV & worse E-Trucks loaded w/ just Soda or Paper is nearly always a Major HAZMAT event as Tons of Lithium Batteries cook off.

EV fire problems only get a lot worse if park next to a building or in any enclosed space. You can't use sprinklers or block air in other ways as done w/ ICE cars because LiIon makes O2 in Thermal Runaway.

"Scott Packs" only have ~ 20 Minutes of Air & only gives you safe air.
LiIon burns release huge amounts of HF & more & normal "Turn out gear" Does Not protect the wearer. HF is far worse then Mustered & others Gasses used in WW1 & eats nearly anything it touches even eating Glass. That only the tip of the iceberg of handling burning or burned EV. Is why the crew handling 1 EV had to wear Full HAZMAT suits & keep everyone else far away from that. Many in the US have 2 garbage bins now... Imagine Seven Bins to move & store them that was pushed in the UK... Then how many Trucks to empty them. Even w/ trucks w/ 2 compactors will be very hard on you & the roads.
