I'm not an engineer or materials expert, but look at all the rivets adjacent to the break spreading the load of the joint. My guess would be if a weld used for a fix, it would stress the material just past where a weld/fish plate would be added causing another tear/break of the support. My guess is that the broken beam is a easily visable sign of another failure mode elsewhere in the bridge support system.

That part of the bridge is a weak point, look at what is right in front of it. The load should have been better distributed.
Repairs that will last are going to require some additional structure not just a repair.
Plus if there is a break this size there are others as well.

Got to wonder who is responsible for inspecting this bridge. There is test equipment that will find these kind of flaws before they get to this point.

You guys remember this one in Minneapolis?

You want a place to spend money on infrastructure?

Yep, had a BIL that had just passed over it, heard something and looked in his rear view mirror and the bridge was gone. Thankfully, he said, he was driving in the fast lane.

Bridges and roads, water lines and sewers and several other things fall into the category of infrastructure. Three trillion bucks and only a small percentage going to what is real infrastructure is lying to the American taxpayer. Call it what it is, vote buying Socialism.

Welding, plates, bolts, additional structure. Yes. Maintinance.
Maybe thats just not what they do, they build it, wait for a crack or break then tear it down and replace. lol

At least, they have re-opened the river to barge and other maritime traffic under the bridge in both directions..
