Why is there suddenly a hidden network connection available on my laptop. (Page 2/2)

I would pressume he would willingly be an informant for the FBI. He would probably offer his services, unsolicited.

I've had new networks pop up on my computers, too. Some have the names of my neighbors who have just gotten wireless modems and some just say Infinity. All of them are secure as I've tried to connect when my internet has gone down. I also have one that says Living Room. That is my TV to which I can cast my computer and use it as a monitor.

Has low bars may means outside of home/building...
How close are neighbors? Go outside and see if bars go up.
Phones are often set WiFi on but allot of other things now try to find or be a router.
Car(s) can have WiFi too doing same or both.
"Smart" TV and more can have WiFi too. Even old Wii has WiFi.

Hidden Nets mostly means whatever device not setup to Broadcast the SSD. Many people think that will add security but Unless maybe use Strict WPA3* to login, there are tools that can un-hind them. (* unlikely because most devices only support WPA2 max that leaves SSD and more in clear.)

Many WiFi Net tools tell what Bands and Channels and Type used. (May only list "best" type for given item.)
2.4ghz can cover much wider area and go thru walls much better then 5ghz. (Or if whatever is on "the bleeding edge" 6ghz)

typical types...
2.4ghz use by WiFi B G R AX/6
5ghz use by WiFi A R AC/5 AX/6
(Numbers are "new names" by Wi-Fi.org )

A B & G are very old types but many routers still support 1 or more of them.

If someone uses OpenWRT and related or some OEM firmware that allows messing w/ the radio for WiFi, they can adjust to get max range can reach out to even wider area.
If you use Comcast and other gateways, they can have second and hidden nets. Example: Comcast Gateways by Default turns On Xfinity HotSpots.

Nearest neighbor is 1/4 mile away in either direction , each thru their own little forest.

T-storms right now and we turned the TV off and unplugged it and the DirectTv box from the dish interface and wall outlet but the extra connection icon was already gone this morning when I got up.

The only other connection I've ever seen was when I had my printer turned on, which hasn't been the case in several weeks
