This Cruise accident in SF is confirming my suspicions about autonomous software (Page 3/4)

Yes, but those developers are old geezers that still think it's better to use a hammer and nails than to embrace the convenience of power tools. The younger generation of developers embrace these new technologies. It enables them to do stuff beyond their own capabilities. Look at the acceptance of hand held technologies (smart phone) amongst the old and young generation. The old generation is complaining that the young generation isn't even able to fart without the help of their phones. But really, why should they? Smart personal devices aren't a "craze", it's not something that will disappear any time soon. They need to learn to read a map instead of using their navigation system in their phone just as much as we need to learn how to drive a horse and carriage instead of our cars.

It won't happen in my lifetime but I suspect in at least some parts of the world, not long after I shuffle off this mortal coil, it will become illegal for humans to drive automobiles.

I think it will happen in our lifetimes. Like I said, numbers don't lie and already full self driving cars are safer (on average) than human drivers. Perhaps not safer than you and me - sensible drivers - but most accidents happen because of irresponsible driving.

I'm glad I'm old and won't see how all this pans out.

Actually, I'm sure you will. Things happen at such an incredible pace now... The progress made is not linear. It's exponential.

Lots of things are.
Including mortality rates as one ages. (I was born before the communists crossed the 38th parallel on the Korean peninsula.)

80% rule. With most problem it is easy to solve 80% of it. But it is that last 20% that can take nearly all the time to solve if it is even possible.

Most driving is easy. It is when there are things outside of the norm that things get complicated quickly. That is where algorithms and AI struggle. In this case an emergency vehicle was outside of the normal parameters for the autonomous car. A few years ago in another famous case a homeless woman entered a highway and was killed by an autonomous car.

My prediction is that we are going to have segregated infrastructure. There will be special roads only for autonomous vehicle. They will probably have much higher speed limits and the cars will be able to travel much closer to each other. The public will support them because they will be safer and faster than highways that we know today.

Well... that's the thing... will it be new infrastructure, or will we convert some older infrastructure to autonomous only? I'm thinking large parts of the city will likely become autonomous first... and then major highways will have an Autonomous-only lane (perhaps)... but damn if one of them doesn't brake down and cause a total backlog of all the other autonomous vehicles. They should program in to honk at eachother so the one that broke down feels really bad about it.

I just want to point out that 75% (Or more) drivers out there should not be allowed to ride a bike, let alone drive a car...

I ride my bike on sidewalks almost exclusively now; A few years ago, I had a car hit the curb right behind me- the guy drove by leaned over towards passenger floor- and finally got ahold of his "smart" phone.....around the same time, a guy hit the curb in front of me- texting while driving- never even stopped to see what damage he'd done to his car.

I think all cell phones should not be able to connect with anything but 911 while your car is moving....

It's illegal to ride your bike on the side walk in most states, but I totally agree with you, and that's exactly what I do too. There is no way in hell I'm riding my bike on the street.
maryjane FEB 20, 11:02 AM
I ride mine on the street all the time but if I ever get stopped for not wearing one of those stupid looking head gears (city ordinance) , I'm done with that.
williegoat FEB 20, 05:44 PM
I don't ride on the major streets. I ride for fun and traffic is not fun. Fortunately, there are many miles of very nicely maintained paths that I can catch, less than a half mile from my house.

But I live in a suburb of a very large metropolitan area. If I lived in a small town, I would probably go everywhere on my bicycle.

The city of Glendale actually set up these signs on the path. You can see the Cardinal's stadium in the background.

...maybe it is time to just go back to the horse and buggy - you never see those things crash into each other, but they apparently confuse the crap out of a Tesla.
