Pennock's FGC Troll gets a beatdown from AI-driven online essay submission grader (Page 1/9)
rinselberg NOV 20, 03:37 AM
AI, as I think almost everyone is already aware, is short for Artificial Intelligence. The AI-driven online paper grader that I have selected is called "PaperRater." It has some options that I will not be using, because they require payment. The more basic functions are "on the house."

PaperRater is a tool that any college or high school student might want to use, to determine whether the written assignment that they are about to submit is well written.

Is PaperRater a good way to evaluate the text messages from Pennock's members that are the embodiment of this online discussion forum's Off Topic conversations?

I think it makes sense. Generally, we are posting our messages to make a point. To support an observation or conclusion. To present a question. To move a conversation forwards, in some way. I think it's fair to say that any writing that has these objectives is best described as an "essay" style of writing. "An essay is, generally, a piece of writing that gives the author's own argument..." That is how it begins. The Wikipedia entry for "essay."

What are high school and college students expected to produce and submit, in writing? Very often, it's called an "essay." It could be a research report, or a short story, or something different. PaperRater is presented as being able to evaluate any of the kinds of writing that a student would commonly be expected to submit.

Internet blogger Nikolay Stoyanov has given PaperRater some "cred." He's an IT professional with a strong background in SEO. Search Engine Optimization.

I used PaperRater to grade one essay-like message that I posted fairly recently on the Pennock's Off Topic Forum.

I am about to provide more detail, by posting another message after this one. But let's cut to the chase:

PaperRater graded my message as a "B" (81 points out of 100.)

The method is simple: COPY the writing sample and PASTE into the PaperRater input field.

PaperRater has three criteria that have to be set by the user:
  1. Education level of writing sample's author
  2. Type of writing sample
  3. Plagiarism detection

For Education, I selected "College (Undergraduate)."

For Type, I selected "Essay."

I did not want to use Plagiarism detection, so I accepted the default, which is "Skip."

After agreeing with the Terms of Service (checkbox) and then selecting the icon that says "Get Report", it only takes a few seconds for PaperRater to provide its report.

PaperRater provides an overall grade, in the right sidebar, where it says "Grade." The Grade is based on five different criteria:
  1. Spelling
  2. Grammar
  3. Word Choice
  4. Style
  5. Vocabulary Words

The user is able to read the feedback from PaperRater for each of the five criteria that are combined to produce the Grade.

Would you mind if we put a different post into the grammar machine?

Because, frankly, the one you used is probably the cherry on top of a pretty big pile of BS.

Only one question for Rinse, do you currently or have you ever owned a Fiero?

Ray Otton: Help yourself.

This could turn into some real fun, in a relative sense, considering the rather constricted range of possibilities for "fun" that is achievable using this online discussion forum.

PS. PaperRater is not just a "grammar machine." It uses five different criteria to arrive at an overall Grade. Grammar is but one of the five criteria that are evaluated.

Ok, but does it pick up things like website links, extraneous bold type, italics, inappropriate quote marks and the other grammatical dodads that you sprinkle throughout your posts?

Ray Otton: What would you say about my very first post on this thread, in so far as extraneous doodads?

I think I have asked this of you before, and perhaps have forgot what you said, but do you access the forum from a mobile phone? A mobile device of very limited or rather modest display area?

I try not to include any page links, bold or italics font style, and quote marks, in so far as I am able to do so without omitting information, or emphasis, or nuance that I think should be part of my message. I've been taking a harder look at quote marks, especially, of late. Whether I should or shouldn't.

Do you see where I used text color to emphasize the third paragraph from the end? How do you feel about that? It's a paragraph that I might have tried to set off in some other way, before. Text in red, instead of italics or boldface. Or putting that text between QUOTE tags. Or using the larger text size. Now it's text color.

As far as PaperRater, I edited the two texts that I submitted to it. I removed all page links and BBCode tags, like [QUOTE] and [B].

I did not want these comparative writing skills specimens to be contaminated. So if my message started by quoting another forum member's words, I removed that.

I don't know how PaperRater would react to page links or to any inclusion of the BBCode tags that are used to create extraneous doodads.

1988 Fiero GT. Five-speed manual. Bright red, with the gold color diamond-spoke style wheels and the camel or tan interior. Leather seats. Not included: factory-installed subwoofer, driver's seat lumbar support, T-tops or rear deck spoiler. Included: sunroof. It's very stock. I'm the third owner. I just took a nontrivial chunk out of my piggybank to have a major engine and drivetrain overhaul.

I could post a photo image, but how would anyone be able to authenticate?

I also have some posts in the Tech section. Not hardly as many as the Off Topic, but more than just one or two. It's a two-digit number. Ten? Twenty? I have not posted in the Tech section all that recently.

A simple yes or no would have sufficed but, thanks for the response.
