Does 'green energy' equate to 'green jobs'? NYT reporter 'drills down' on it--some. (Page 1/1)

Here's how it starts:

Patricia Fahy, a New York State legislator, celebrated when a new development project for the Port of Albany — the country’s first assembly plant dedicated to building offshore wind towers — was approved in January.

“I was doing cartwheels,” said Ms. Fahy, who represents the area.

Before long, however, she was caught in a political bind.

A powerful union informed her that most of the equipment for New York’s big investment in offshore windmills would not be built by American workers but would come from abroad. Yet when Ms. Fahy proposed legislation to press developers to use locally made parts, she met opposition from environmentalists and wind industry officials. “They were like, ‘Oh, God, don’t cause us any problems,’” she recalled.

Thanks!

I just fixed that.

Wood Mackenzie is "bullish" on the prospects for growing the U.S. offshore wind energy sector.

quote
The growth of US offshore wind will not only deliver clean energy in the US, but also generate significant near-term, mid-term and long-term economic benefits. BOEM [Federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management] has designated a number of call areas [prospective locations for offshore wind energy projects] along the East and West Coasts that are expected to be leased in the near future. This paper studied the direct and indirect economic impacts that could be realized if those auctions occur this year and next. A significant near-term benefit will be $2 billion in US Treasury revenue. Even more significant, is the mid-term development and construction of offshore wind farms created by these leases would support 80,000 jobs annually and generate hundreds of billions of dollars of investment into construction, transportation and port-related development. Long-term, these projects will provide sustainable green energy to 20 million households and support 20,500 jobs annually beyond 2035 that continues for decades.

I like the giant wind turbines that tower like skyscrapers and have three supersized blades, each extending the length of an American-style football field. Are they not kind of mesmerizing? I've only seen them in photos and videos. (Bet you didn't see that coming.)

Actually, I have seen some large land wind turbines as I made my way south on California highways.

"President Biden pushes offshore wind as green energy alternative"
CBS This Morning; April 22, 2021.

In an effort to catch up with Europe, where offshore wind has been a strong industry for decades, the U.S. is now hoping to expand its offshore wind turbine footprint and power 10 million homes by 2030. Ben Tracy reports.

This video report has received an A+ rating from the Anonymous Conspiracy to Promote Offshore Wind Energy. It's a great report. It even echoes the idea at the end of my previous message, about the positive aesthetic value of these giant-sized offshore wind turbines.
