Qualifications start this Saturday.

I will be there again because this year is very special for my family.

This time it's personal.

It started out as the "halo" which was basically a protective cage:

The team (Top Gun Racing) did a lot better than I was expecting considering everything. But I also wasn't expecting this to be the fastest qualifying field ever. I remember when there was usually a 5+ mph differential between pole and last position.

Seems like the big teams have the current chassis pretty figured out now with the aeroscreens. If you aren't one of the big teams, or have a technical affiliation with a big team, good luck. Unless of course you are Penske this year, I don't know what was up with their qualification trim this year and lack of speed. Will Power was either putting it in the show or going out on the back of the flatbed with his ballsy run.

Even though Top Gun didn't make the field, they also didn't overextend themselves and wreck the car.... Hope they find the funding to make another race or two later this year to gain more experience.

Last year after a long time in development. As for the reason, see Pocono IndyCar race, 2015.

Thanks for your kind words!

This isn't the end for Top Gun Racing this season.

My young nephew did the best he could driving that car and was faster and faster each time on the track with it, but it bears keeping in mind that the entire car was basically all in cardboard boxes and shipping containers a few weeks ago.

When the folks in the Grant King / Top Gun facility assembled the #75 car other teams had already run 3 Indy Car races with their setups this season.

This isn't the first time for us at Indy since RC has run there several times in Indy Lights, (Freedom 100 and IGP) and the Mazda RTI series but it was a real thrill for our family with trying to qualify for "the big show" this year.

As far as those new "windshields" / aero-screens, all the drivers are saying that they have actually removed one of the "senses" for them. The wind buffeting on your helmet helps you "read" a lot of things by how the wind is hitting your helmet, especially when you're running in tow.... but that's been taken away now.

Do they have any potential sponsorship deals in the works, or does one of the owners just have really deep pockets?

Although I appreciated the Johnny Lightning throwback paint scheme....retro probably doesn't pay the bills.

They should try a road course (maybe Mid-Ohio since that isn't that far from their Indianapolis shop?), probably wouldn't finish last with Jimmy Johnson still learning how to drive a car with wings and downforce that actually handles.

I'm guessing they'll probably also take a shot at Gateway in August if they just want to stick to ovals for now.

P.S. - His team needs some merchandise on their site other than face masks. I'd buy some shirts or something to show my support as a IndyCar fan.
