How would you suggest someone " properly celebrate" this holiday? Would like to do so and make sure it's not just "A day off from school"... know what I mean?

That is for every American to decide for themselves,

That's part of the freedom that those men and women gave their lives for.

Perhaps visit a local military cemetery. The sea of headstones, grave markers are usually adorned with flags. It's impressive to see and if it's doesn't choke you up you simply have no heart. We are lucky to have the Quantico Veterans Cemetery close by where both my dad and father in-law are buried and we also have Arlington National an hour away. We took our two kids every year. They are now grown and have continued to visit.

Place a flower on a grave, say a prayer of thanks.

Nice suggestions. Although emotionally harder to do, I've actually paid tribute to the fallen by helping/thanking a fallen Marine's family for their sacrifice. It ain't easy, it gets pretty emotional but, they know I mean it. Those fallen have paid the price for our freedom, more will pay that price. Freedom is not free, it must be defended.

Isnt the Day supposed to be about the soldiers, and not about neo-con wars in the Middle-East? The cartoon seems a propaganda piece to me.

Sometimes you say asinine things. This is one of those times.

That IMHO would be totally dependent on the viewer's perspective. If that's what you see, so be it. That would not be my perspective.
