Not exactly what was promised back in the 50s....cars you drove out of your garage and took right to the air but what we ended up with was clapper table lamps and blankets with sleeves.
Cessna did make a promise too...

The last line of the article tells the real story:

quote | As you'd no doubt already be aware, very few of us commute in light aircraft, as they're impractical for a list of reasons longer than this article. If a real flying car is ever to become popular, it's going to be something completely unlike existing cars or small planes. We're sorry to say that while literal flying cars have existed for decades, a usable "flying car" isn't coming any time soon. |
|
Sorry Don, it ain't that time yet.

Look at a car suspension and note that it doesn't lend itself to landing gear properties. The weight difference of a car and a plane?
I don't think we're going to see a popular version in our lifetime.

Please tell me what you know about glide slope.
Honestly, I don't know what may or may not have been done to the design of the suspension but, I assure you, I can land so softly, you won't know it.

The Chinese have been working on developing a "flying car" but something was lost in the translation:

Unless they put a computer in control of the landings the ordinary driver won't master it. Another group could do it with enough runway.
But the greatest danger we face is the White supremacists who would fill it full of explosives to commit insurrection, or.murder people for their skin color with it.

I bet the folks in the PNW US and Canada can 'fly' one this week as well. I saw where parts of British Columbia Canada reached 118F Tuesday. (only 10% humidity tho)

PFFT! Amatures. That's what we call a nice spring morning. I has been so hot here a few times that they had to shut down the airport because the charts didn't go that high.
